Why do you ask? What are you looking to possibly change?

Improve what? Start with taking the rolled towels off the bed?

Get rid of the bench, and put the dresser in the more logical spot, under the mirror?

Lose the quilt rack........Better lamps? Larger art above the bed.

Lose the wood bench at the foot for a storage bench?

You haven't said what you are going for, looking for.......or even if you are in love with the white/red color scheme.

I'm open to any suggestions for a colour scheme. This home is a vacation rental in Paternoster, South Africa. The concrete floor is painted in a sand color. I am open to completely replacing the furniture. I like the idea of having a full-length mirror and blackout blinds for the window. Thank you, Kendrah!

I'm curious what the room is that has walls that don't go to the ceiling? Can that be removed?

The wall cannot be removed as the kitchen is on the other side. This photo is from 2006.

For me, the white is too cool/blinding for the warm wood ceiling. If you intend to paint, warm up the white.

The closet doors reveal a poorly constructed do-it-yourself cupboard and an entrance to the bathroom. I shall address this in a separate Design Dilemma discussion. We intend to remove the door marked as 'bathroom' on the far right and replace it with a sliding pocket door. Previously, two sizable cupboards stood against that wall. The wall to the left is drywall.

I would lean into more red in the room.

  • last year

Unless this place is in the South African version of Miami or Vegas, I'd ditch the red. Red in a bedroom does not give a relaxed, posh vacation vibe. I'd personally throw the current red bed accessories in the closet as soon as I arrived.

Did the same designer who suggested the watercolor print and hard gray furniture in your other space suggest you add the red?

Is this place near the water as well? If so, blue or tan accents would be more fitting, especially with those gorgeous ceilings.

In answer to your question Deegw: The window next to the bed provides a limited view of the ocean. This home has three bedrooms. Photos of the other two bedrooms are attached.

(Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. These three bathrooms present numerous design challenges that will be addressed in upcoming posts)

I like the idea of tan accents! I think they would complement the floor and ceiling beautifully.

The watercolour print and hard-gray furniture were approved by a designer, but the red accents I inflicted on the room myself;)

First? Stick to ONE post, as beds and baths share a relationship.

Two ? You must post an inspo pic or three of what look you MIGHT like in this bedroom. Nobody here reads minds, the suggestions will be a thousand, all over the place.

Third? Post a drawing with the windows, the entry, all the walls with feet and inches noted. Upload it as a jpeg.

It's the USA. : ) for this site.

Stick to one post....add all below

Easy fix, go with tones of blue in the pillow covers and throw or continue the blue from the day bed and curtains. If you would like a dash of color, the only item I would think of retaining is the darker red fluffy one. However it might be best to just stay with the blue.

I would put a bigger bed in the room. It looks like you have room for one. That would be more appealing to vacationers.

Baseboards would be a huge improvement. The wall to floor transition looks unfinished and gives a dirty vibe.

Noted, Jan. Thank you. I refrained from posting inspirational photos because I wanted unbiased design recommendations. I am concerned that my personal preferences may adversely influence the room's aesthetic. Seeking what is most suitable for the house is my priority. The feedback from Houzz users has been exceptional. For the first time ever, I can envision what the home should and could look like!

@Norwood Architects: Should I install drywall on top of this structure, all the way to the ceiling?

  • last year

Following Jan Moyer's guidance - I'll discuss the cupboard issue/design dilemma in this thread and not start a new post. After that, I'll post my questions about the bathroom.

"Post a drawing with the windows, the entry, all the walls with feet and inches noted. Upload it as a jpeg." I will be able to do that in the next few days.

This is what it looks like inside the cupboard when the camera is pointed towards the ceiling. Shall I remove the drywall and everything and put a regular cupboard against the wall or improve the current setup?

A few things about the bathroom:

    1. Should I keep the tiles? The cleaning crew doesn't clean them thoroughly enough for my liking.

    2. There used to be a door connecting to the other bedroom upstairs, but it has now been closed with drywall. Should I break the stairs down?

    3. Should I keep the concrete bathtub or install a built-in white one?

I”m not a fan of the red agasint the white. I’d try to use more organic colors like the other rooms…tans, brown, white. It’s a beautiful houlse. I like the tan ties in the bathroom. I don’t know that I would replace them unless they might be difficut to keep clean. I’d have the co. come back if you still can to clean them.

Finish the baseboards before anything else.

Update: this is what we did.

Much better. But I'd do something different with the towels (get them off the bed) and neaten up the bedding. It looks like someone has been sleeping in it already!
