Hard to know. Where do you live? What type of animals do you have in your area? If you were in my area, I would say, its probably a ground hog.

Where is it in regards to the home? Is the area mountainous?

What is the diameter of the hole? Badger size, fox size, chipmunk, mole, vole?

Could be a fox hole too. In any case, I would fill it with top soil. You can buy it by the bag for about 3.00 for a good sized bag.

It is around 12 inch in diameter. not sure of how deep it is. do you know how to find what can be inside and how to make that come out

Looks like a Badger burrow. Yes they are in Michigan so don't stick your face in the hole because the badger will rip it off.

Salvage the spark lighter,lp tank and hose from a gas grill. Splice 10 extra feet of wire on the lighter, drop lighter in hole and place exciter button behind something 10 feet from hole. Poke lp hose down hole and open valve for 20 seconds then run hit sparker.

KA-BOOM If that doesn't bring him out he's dead,just cover the hole and don't fret over it any longer.

KA-BOOM would be quite extreme, put a trail cam and you will soon find out the identity of your neighbor.

You could be right barent,if it's a den full of skunks KA-BOOM would stink things up for miles around for days. Shut it down Newt we aren't KA-BOOMING until a little more investigation.

Most of the hole will be filled in when you just rake back the soil that was kicked out. Top it off with the same soil as is all around you.
