Kitchen task lighting advise.

last modified: last year

Hello all and thank you, I would appreciate your input on a lighting conundrum I am having for my task lighting above the stove and sink counter in my unfinished kitchen. Attached is a photo and a not to scale sketch.

The space is 5m (16)' x 4m (13')

The fridge wall will have floor-to-ceiling cabinets.

I have a switch for 3 pendant lights above the to-be-built 2.3m (7.5') x .8m (32") movable eating bar on wheels.

A switch for a light above to-be-built the movable island on wheels.

A switch for the 4 pot spotlights.

The stove counter will be 3.6m (11.8') x .8m (32") *no upper cabinets

The sink counter will be 2.5m (8') x .8m (32") *no upper canbets.

There is one stitch for lights above the stove counter and sink counter

I am considering tracking lighting with 4 heads above the stove counter, and 4 heads above the sink counter.

Good idea?

What are your thoughts?

Pendants, chandelier, pot lights, track lights...oh my....

More is not better here. Keep the pendants -or- the chandelier and do all the rest in pot lights -- you can light the cr*p out of the entire space with a uniform look. Best to put them on dimmers, and you can put them on different switches for different task areas, if you'd like.

No to track lighting. Not a good look IMO.

Thank you very much for your input I appreciate it. I know it sounds like a lot but there is a method to the madness. My wife agrees with you on the track lighting. Regarding the pot lights, I am concerned the spread will be too wide and flood the area, not light the counters. I will consider your suggestion. Everything is on dimmers. and the idea is not all the lights will be on at the same time, every option has its purpose. Thank you again, now I have to go tell my wife that she might be right...or do I. :~)

First a rework of the layout IMO is a must . Then you get a good hood fan that has lighting that takes care of the light for the range . Then pot lights are great for over all lighting and they can go on dimmers . I ahve idea whay dimmers in a kitchen where good light is a huge must have. Thjose walkways seem very narrow how much space do your have all around that island for walk space . IMO 48" min. If that island is to scale then go back to the planning and figure out the size of an island you can have when all walkways are 48" Better yet post a to scale drawing here nothing in it but show the windows, doorways where those lead and every measurement clearly marked Post her ein jpeg format in a commnet DO NOT start another post and please use feet and incehs since this is a US site.

Thank you Patricia I appreciate your input. Everything is on dimmers. The appliance locations are fixed and a hood is not an option for us. The total available walking space is currently (+/-) 3.5m (11.6') from the fridge to the sink and 1.2m (10") from the stove to the movable eating bar. The island is not built so will be proportioned accordingly. My stumbling block is the task lighting above the stove and sink counters. Thank you very much for your time. I am retired and have spent waaaay too many hours on AutoCAD, but, may be one last time. As they say "it's the plumber that has the dripping tap at home." Thank you again.
