When one orders something in a box where all the boards are one length or a limited number of lengths, this is not unusual. Proper layout and staggering of butt ends should go a long way toward disguising this issue.

You seem to be describing a running bond pattern. That is avoidable even with only 2 lengths. The number of different lengths is wholely dependent on the manufacturer's choice for that particular product line.

Folks, you're missing the point. It needs to be staggered more appropriately from the nosing. This can be done by cutting random 'starters', routed with a groove and a spline inserted. Of course then you're probably dealing with a needed micro bevel that can be done in several ways. Stain and dab some finish.

Tell that to the flooring pros on the job. If they scratch their head I don't know what to say.
