I’ve had closets installed by a place like California Closets and I’ve had closets built and installed by a cabinet maker. I was a little disappointed in the California Closets installation because I didn’t realize that all of their components are standardized. I lost some space at the top of the closet as a result. My completely customized system was a joy and served me well for many years. If I needed a different configuration at any point, almost any finish carpenter or even a handyman could make the changes to the basic structure.

I’ve never tried the systems offered by Ikea or Container Store, but both will help you design a system for free. No matter which type of system you get, you need to decide exactly how much and what type of storage you need before you start the process.

I have designed and installed elfa closets from The Container Store in my four homes for me and for my children, and in my friend’s home. I used their designers once and think they have their formula, but every closet and user is different. elfa keeps adding and upgrading their options, which is exciting. and it is easy to install yourself! I had never used a drill before I installed the first one, my bf at the time coached me through using the drill and always putting the chuck key back!
