No evidence that corn meal controls bugs, though there is some myth that it can repel ants. Corn meal is often used to breed bugs.

I thought it was more for a disease suppressant - along with encouraging good microbes.

Well, but you could be feeding bugs. There's a reason you get bugs showing up in flour and corn meal.

You can use whatever you want but it's not gonna do anything to control any bugs nor is it any kind of fungicide. At best, corn gluten meal (not grits or regular corn meal) has been shown to demonstrate some herbicidal ability on seedlings but the results are inconsistent. The use of corn in the garden - other than as a harvestable crop or a very low grade fertilizer- is essentially a gardening myth.

The bugs that thrive on cornmeal aren't garden pests, BTW.

I should add that pillbugs, which can be a garden pest, are often trapped with cornmeal bait. Why? Because they like it.
