Narrow living room configuration for sectional

Hi, I am considering purchasing a sectional but I’m on the fence, any suggestions would be welcomed. Cons it’s white but the purchase price is reasonable considering other manufacturers. The room is 13’ x 18’ and the sectional fits by the window.

Sectionals are rarely the best option for a living room (or even just a good option). They severly limit how you are able to arrange the space. As suggested above, post a simple sketch of your room (to scale - graph paper - if you don’t have any, you can print some off if you search for it).

I originally wanted a sectional when I was looking for new furniture for my living room (15.5’ x 19.5’), but decided to purchase a sofa + two chairs instead.

I also bought a large fabric ottoman (matches sofa) + am having a custom walnut waterfall wood table (with hidden wheels) built to fit over the ottoman. This way the ottoman can be separately positioned like a chaise off one end of sofa when desired (movie night) + also is a functional coffee table + footrest when needed. I haven’t decided on the exact design/dimensions yet - but something similar to below:

The waterfall table is able to be rolled easily:

It’s too big for the space. With a narrow room, a long low sofa against the wall flanked by chairs usually works best.

The sectional will swallow the room and limit your layout. A low price is always tempting but it is not actually a good deal if it doesn't work for your space and sadly, this one does not.

Thank you all for the feedback I will continue looking

Just an observation…I like your current sofa’s shape! Is there something wrong with it? I also like your media console. Have you considered purchasing a large rug to anchor your space before you add any additional furniture? Then, drawing a color from the rug, I suggest two chairs, and at least one side table, too. Do you have a rug for your living room?

Hi @ Ptreckel thank you have had it for some time now wanted a change. Yes considering purchasing a rug but on the opposite wall is a fireplace, don’t want to cover it up with a chair it’s the layout I had prior.

These are long and narrow living room floor plans for 12 x 20 rooms but gives you an idea for possible layouts....(taken from the Savvy Heart)

I'm a fan of a sectional and a large ottoman for your space. The ottoman can act as a surface for snacks or laptops. It can be pushed up against the sofa for comfortable lay out tv viewing for several people when paired with the chaise. Good if you have kids. It will be a destination spot for everyone using your space. Your space is too limited for multiple seats and a traffic path through the area to the stairs, imo. Go for comfort over a formal layout.

Glad to hear that Dan! I had the layout prior and the chair blocks the fireplace, still considering a sectional.

I am a lover of Candice Olson Design, and loved her show. She used sectionals all the time because they sat a lot of people and often hugged the walls. you should look up some of her living rooms for inspirations. Also tape off the sofa dimensions on your floor and put a chair inside the tape lines and sit on the chair and see how it feels....I think the sectional would be great. Chairs added to a room with a straight need a lamp and an end table to put things, and can mean buying more furniture. But you are wise to be thinking about it before you make a decision. Good luck.

    Thank you Susan!

It’ll limit your layout to only one, but it’ll be a nice one. Go for it!

An option that acts like a sectional is a sofa with chaise with one or two large ottomans. The Uppland from IKEA has pieces for this. The seat cushions use pocketed springs for longevity.

That is a great sofa too. Candice has used it I believe in a basement. Awesome of course.

Here's the layout with the sectional. You could add a narrow table behind it (in front of window) so you have a place to add a lamp and drinks.

Emily is showing you that yes, you can put the sectional in the room. What is important is the rug, and it shows perfectly in her mock up. An inspiration photo which includes your window treatments, art on wall and floor lamp found on decorpad.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful and I’m loving the sectional,

You’re welcome. Always helps to see in 3-D.

I'm a fan of sectionals and I think one would work great in your room. I personally dislike the chaise option. While they might be nice for one person to stretch out for tv watching or to read, I find that when entertaining/seating a group, they really limit seating options because many guests don't want to stretch out for conversations and they can be awkward to enter and exit. I would prefer no chaise but an ottoman that can be used with an of the seats and moved when necessary. Also an extra seat when there is a crowd.

    Here's a floorplan showing a sofa plus 2 armchairs:

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the measurements on Costco's website but doesn't look like that sectional would fit in your room:

looks like Larissa isn't available any more, but costco has some that appear they would fit.

I was holding back because it did seem a bit big for the space but will continue the search for a smaller sectional. Thank you Lisedv and Oly

Costco has a similar color Thomasville that looks like it could work. I have a 35 year old Thomasville sectional that I love. Not sure if their quality is the same these days. I had mine recovered about 10 years ago and it's held up so well.

The sectional below is available at Costco and is modular so you can reorganize it in different positions (ex 1 sofa & armless loveseat, etc.).

You guys are awesome and so helpful! I saw it in Costco and said that would fit perfectly but do you think it’s too much beige going on?

I just bought this sectional from Costco and it’s more of a very light gray. I’m loving it!

The Larissa is out of stock, but the shorter length of the sectional that would set behind the window is only 101", which for a 13' room (156") should have enough room to fit. Make sure by measuring from the right of the door frame to the wall. My guess is you have around 9' there, so you'll be fine if you stay around 100". Here's one from BigLots that is slightly smaller but same configuration:

I think the suggestion to not use a chaise is a good one. It's more versatile to use an ottoman instead. Here's one without the chaise from Value City Furniture"

I'm not crazy about the color on this one, but the configuration is good......

"do you think it’s too much beige going on" Unless you buy a more vibrant color, any neutral you get will require you to bring in colors with an area rug, pillows, art, paint, draperies, etc. So it could be too much beige if you didn't accessorize with color, but if you use color elsewhere, you'll be fine.

This has been very helpful and appreciate all the suggestions and help with layout choices. Decided to go with a sectional without a chaise but preferably deep seated since I like to lay down, so still looking. Everything out there is pretty big and not much of a fan of modular.

Consider getting one with loose back cushions that you can remove or move when you want to recline and need a bit more room. You also will double the wear time for the upholstery if you can flip the cushions around.
