I don't know why it matters what anyone thinks about how you choose to paint your bedroom. I wouldn't choose a dark color, but it's your bedroom. If you're only in there to sleep, a dark color doesn't sound like a crazy idea. Other people like their bedrooms dark, if you do, you do you. :-)

You could start by painting the wall behind the headboard to see how you like it. If you're not sure about doing all four walls you could leave that wall dark and the others light. And of course Lyn is right, everything else in the room has to work with it as well. All of the rooms shown below have abundant natural light.

Thank you both for your answers! The room is rectangular, approximately 115 square feet (based on my very precise calculations), with a French window on one of the short sides that allows natural light throughout every daytime hour. As for the photos, this is quite an extreme makeover, and I haven't looked into decor much yet. I probably won't be going for color drenching, though.

The reason color matters to me is because: a) I don't just use the room for sleeping; as an IT guy, I spend a lot of time there (yes, I'm working on it!) and b) I also have mild nearsightedness, which has me concerned that color could affect more than just aesthetics, especially during the evenings.

I too love dark moody bedrooms after all it is where you sleep most of the time I love this gray bedroom so elegant and not dreary at all. I do not love teal so that is me .There are some really beautiful dark greens or navy that can also work You do need to share some pics of the space and I always choose bedding I love and then work with it for the rest of the decor including wall color. BTW really good advice is do not ask anyone in your family about decor ever .

I went with a dark alcove in my room and love it ... and the second color is mid-toned. Another bedroom in our house is a roasted red chili pepper color. I think dark bedrooms are cozy not gloomy. If you want dark, go for dark! At worst, it's a can of paint if you hate it.

I can't seem to get the color to come out accurately right now, but here's the current:

Wall Colors: BM Kalamata (darker color) and BM Inspired (light color)

I like darker bedrooms. Where else is there a better place for moodiness? The terra cotta color floors remind me of Spanish style, so look to that for inspiration. Cobalt or teal would be a good choice. Go for the darker, grayed tones not the brighter tones of these colors. AS for working in your room and lighting, get good task lighting for when you are working. That's what they're for.

You might achieve your look by using dark trim and off white walls.

The colors you linked to don't look dark to me at all. They seem like bright jewel toned colors.

Do you think the colors would make the room dark and hard to see in? If so, that is an issue of lighting and not so much an issue of wall color. My eye sight is terrible. I can see in a room with dark paint if the lighthing is excellent.
