We had better luck letting a shoot grow a foot long, wrap it in a paper towel, shove it in a plastic bag and then spray the towel with roundup.

Same w/me and trumpet vine. Long ago cut down, but continues to sprout everywhere. I just pull 'em when I got 'em (hat tip to a bunch of movies).

Most vines have some sort of 'take over the world' mentality. Their methodology varies.

So far about the only native vines I can say don't have much of that imperative is the native clematises (however, the Japanese/Chinese DO have that desire). It seems to be the nature of the beast.

You sure what your seeing is Wisteria? seems kind of odd that american wisteria would get so aggressive its known for being more docile.

I've had two experiences with american wisteria. 1) It doesn't grow, sits there for years like a lump THEN 2) Finally having established it's place after perhaps seven years, it starts coming out of the ground everywhere.

The experience I have not had (and it mystifies the grower (friend of mine)) is 3) beautiful blooms in abundance. Perhaps if I hadn't sold the property shortly after #2?

Which 'native' clematis is that ? I suspect you're actually talking about the japanese Clematis terniflora with the white fall flowers often called Sweet Autumn clematis (and which smells like cat pee to me). Though it's entirely possible SOME NA native clematis which I have not experienced is aggressive. Though that foliage doesn't look like SAC, which is usually shiny (to me)?
