Dishwasher disaster

Bought a Maytag (owned by Whirlpool) dishwasher through Home Depot that worked once and then started leaking. Reached out to Home Depot and they indicated they had no responsibility after 48 hours. Contacted Whirlpool and they sent a rapairman out who verfied that it was defective but he could not authorise replacement since it was repairable and he would order the part. Was informed today that the part was not availablle and to contact Whirlpool. Did so and they informed me I would have to wait 14 days and then we would “go from there”! Obviously one should not do bussiness with either of these companies but is there any recourse other than treating it as sunk cost and buying a dishwasher elsewhere?

Never, never, never shop at Home Depot. They treated me horribly when I had them replace my countertops two decdes ago, and I'm still angry -- they are scum of the earth. I never miss an opportunity to point this out.

As to where to buy, since you've already paid for this machine and had it installed, I'd want to try the repair piece first -- even if it means waiting 14 days. Just simpler. Without knowing what shops are available in your area, I don't think any of us can recommend a vendor.

"Obviously one should not do business with either of these companies..."

Home Depot is a store. It has no control over when you install or first use an appliance. Do you expect it to take back an appliance weeks or months after sale or repair appliances, a service it does not offer? You could have had the same problem with the appliance if you'd bought it elsewhere. Whirlpool cannot manufacture parts on the fly; of course you wait for the part.

Mrs Pete: "Never, never, never shop at Home Depot."

You still hold a grudge against Home Depot after 20 years?

It sounds like they are trying to get the part and will repair or replace it. obviously it sucks to without a dishwasher for several weeks but it doesn’t sound like anyone has done anything wrong here.

My concern is the part won’t be available even then based upon the repairmans text that Whirlpool couldn’t be sure when the part would be available.

What is the part number that's needed?

Do not know but it was a pump motor

What's the model number of the dishwasher? The full model number from the tag on the machine, which should be found on edge of the tub, visible when the door is open. Parts diagrams can be found online, and many sources of parts. The item of question should be tagged as backordered status on those that have to-the-moment supply references if it is so.

It would be interesting to know the dishwasher model. The Maytag MDB4949SKZ is an extremely popular model (8000+ reviews at Home Depot) and its W11416363 pump & motor -- which also fits the MDB8959SKZ and MDB7959SKZ -- is readily available from multiple on-line sources.

I would complain complain complain until it was replaced. I would not be happy with a repair on a brand new appliance.

Why? If the broken part is replaced, the appliance will be exactly the same as a new one.

How long has it been since purchase? You can file a claim with your credit card for a defective product purchase and request a refund Check the time frame with your card issuer.

Olychick: "You can file a claim with your credit card for a defective product purchase..."

Do you really think the credit card company is going to just refund, say, $600-$1000, when the dishwasher (which has never been repaired) just needs a part (that will be replaced at no cost) to become usable?

There are credit cards that would make it right for you.

But let me give you my advice on your situation. I would NEVER wait 2 weeks for some bottom-of-the-barrel repairperson. and then for the ordering of the part, and maybe a return visit in a 4 hour window, ugh!,. My family is too big, my usage too high, my nerves too short.

I would text my trusty, tried and true, helpful local appliance repair guy, who would visit to diagnose within a day or two, we would order the part, and I would pay for the part and the repair.

And that is why I wouldnt bother with a warranty at all.

    Name one.

No one is saying the fix by a credit card company is a sure thing but if all other avenues have failed, I would certainly try it. It It’s no skin off the cc to refund, because they take back the money from the vendor.

    VISA has purchase protection

Really? So the credit card company would "take back the money" from Home Depot which met its obligation by delivering the dishwasher to the customer and which has no responsibility for it after 48 hours?

A Mat: "VISA has purchase protection"

Here's the summary of VISA Purchase Protection:

"Visa Cardholders can benefit from the security and safety offered through Visa Purchase Protection. If something you bought with your eligible Visa card is accidentally damaged or Stolen within 180 days from the date of purchase, you are protected"

Was the dishwasher accidentally damaged? Nope. Was it stolen? Ha ha!

Here’s my experiences: My brand new washer, bought from a local small business. The washer failed less than 30 minutes (yes minutes) after the installers left. I was refused a new replacement washer and they insisted on fixing. It took about 10 days to get the parts. The guy came, took the machine apart entirely (got grease on my floors) and it didn’t work. The store then decided to send a replacement which took about a week. A few years prior to this, I had had trouble with a leaking brand new GE fridge. They fixed. A different problem happened a week later. Fixed that one. Third time, a different problem. This repairman decided to replace “everything” that could become a problem because he knew this model was a lemon. Surprisingly, that thing ran for 20 years with no further problems.

I am pretty sure Amex would indeed backcharge Home Depot. And while this one transaction might not makea dent, if HD keeps getting dinged for the poor service of THEIR suppliers, they will take action. They have a heck of a lot more pull with Maytag than any single consumer.

    Based on what?

"if HD keeps getting dinged for the poor service of THEIR suppliers..."

How is Whirlpool/Maytag providing "poor service" by repairing the dishwasher under warranty?

Olychick wdcruise: You should have read further:

"This reason code [13.3] applies when the cardholder claims that the merchandise or services received are significantly different from what was agreed upon at the time of purchase" which it isn't. And the purchase includes a the warranty against defects. And the manufacturer IS repairing the appliance as required by the warranty.

The purchaser didn't receive a working machine. I think that is significantly different from a new machine that works.

The dishwasher reportedly worked once until leaking on the second run, so it wasn't completely DOA.

The OP didn't state what was the method of payment. He/she would need to check with his/her ccard carrier, if payment was via ccard, to determine whether it offers purchase protection benefits that would apply to the situation.

The OP hasn't replied further, seems to not be interested in additional assistance.
