Recessed lighting or what to install?

I am moving my kitchen to another location in my house. The room in the pictures that you see will eventually become a dining room once I finish removing all the kitchen items (cabinets/range/dishwasher/sink) from it. The first two pictures are before pictures, while the second two pictures are "where I am now" pictures.

Where I am now is a mess. I have removed the large reflected (cove) lighting fixture that you see in the first two pictures. Removing it was a great idea, as the room seems much larger without it and that built-in fixture was a nasty dust-catcher.

My question is what sort of lighting do I install instead? Long skinny pendant? Shallow linear recessed LED light that fits within the current ceiling hole? Horizontal or drum pendant? Can lights?

I imagine that figuring the lighting out will be easier once all the current kitchen items have been removed. I ask now because the ceiling is already ripped up. I would hate to pay to have the ceiling repaired only to install some lighting fixtures that rip up the ceiling again.

So, does anyone have any ideas? It all looks rather awful at this point, but any suggestions or guidance will be greatly appreciated. My plan is to stick my rectangular wooden table (has removable leaves) and sideboard in the room. Thank you!

- How about just a large pendant hung between the skylights
- Or two pendants depending on the length of the room and dining table, and positions of the skylights
- This one skipped the pendants and used small recessed lights over the table and around the room
- Or arranged in a rectangle around the skylight (or two skylights in your case)
- LED strip lights mounted in channels around the edges of the lightwells.

I would install some recessed lights in the space. Shop at a lighting showroom for better quality and options. Use recessed lights designed for sloped ceilings.

IMO we need a to scale floor plan of the new layout all windows , dooraways where those lead all clearly marked those skylights marked with a dotted line every measirement clearly marked and the new kitchen design since the lighting needs to be done for that first. Post here on graph paper in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another post The furniture choices come after the kitchen is designed do not get to far ahead of yourself. Post lights are only one layer of lighting it takes real planning to have good overall lighting and that is done when designing the other spaces too.

If you know where the dining table is going to be you know where to put a junction box for some type of chandelier. You might want some recessed lighting also, but no need to go overboard with it. When dining, the chandelier will be the most important light source. But don't be afraid to use your imagination with the fixture. Your house looks very modern, so get something special for the room.
