Just ran across a review of the AirHood on the SeriousEats site. It is a countertop device that basically is a ducted table-top fan with oil and charcoal filters. Placed next to a cooktop or range, it draws cooking effluent from the cooktop and filters oily vapors, particulates and some odors from the exhaust air. I'd never heard of this but it turns out to have been around for a couple of years or so, had kickstarter funding, has some sort of Instagram following, and even Consumer Reports has reviewed it,

I'm mentioning it because, for as long as I've been on this forum, we've been seeing numbers of threads every year asking about substitutes for range hoods for kitchens in which an overhead, effective, vented range hood isn't feasible for some reason or another.

While it seems hope springs eternally, the conclusions have always been that some hood-substitutes are outright useless, some are only better than nothing, and some (very expensive) devices can work well enough for those with the budget to install one (e.g. VAH's expensive ARS system).

According to the Serious Eats author's testing and the other reviews I've now seen, the AirHood works well enough to be in the better than nothing category.

Apparently, the cordless version is not recommended for use with gas stoves and cooktops and there are cautions for using the corded version next to them. It does not capture gas combustion byproducts such as nitrogen oxides.

It seems aimed at places that either can't afford or can't accommodate a workable hood (e.g., small rentals in old buildings, RVs, etc.) It may be of help in kitchens that have useless hoods. Maybe also something for temporary kitchen spaces when remodeling?

Anybody have one of these who is able to comment further?
