I prefer the 12 lite, but it really depends on your location, your need for privacy and light control.

9 lite 2 panel from a quality manufacturer, especially if using fiberglass.

I like the sound of a 9 lite. You might also consider a door with glass that mimics the windows you get. Though not a ranch style home, this could work and shows what I mean.

Your ranch is not a Colonial or Victorian or Cape Cod or Craftsman....absolutely no muntins in the door or windows. Do some research....spending some serious money here, get it right.

Any of these designs (in a single door) would work. Don't select anything too COLONIAL in style.

What type of ranch would you consider this home to be? Based on what I’ve seen online I was assuming I’d be safe with colonial/traditional style.

You don’t even have grids on your existing windows. The only item that leans Colonial are the shutters and that’s not Architecture.

What style are you wanting the ranch to be…I do believe you could go modern or traditional…are you keeping the shutters? what windows will you be installing? can you post a photo..maybe look for inspiration here on house photo gallery before you pick anything…both big ticket items.

You said you are adding the grids to the windows to mimic the multiple frames of possibly a 6 over 6? However, where I live, while I love the look of the long glass, I would probably select the door with the smaller windows at the top. I would choose a dramatic color to paint the door, especially if painting your trim another color doesn't seem to be planned. I am guessing this home was built in the 1950's, maybe early 60's. So style-wise, an early version of mid-century modern. I'm not sure if this style has a classification with an actual name, but they are abundant in the US. The new window look will be great!

The home was built in 1979 and is traditional inside. Our plan was to replace the windows to ones with grids that would be a 6 over 6 size. We tend prefer traditional over modern and would like to move forward with the outside with that in mind. Do you have sources to find more info about doing this correctly? Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and giving me things to think about too too!

This is what the front porch looked like when the home was originally built and after seeing photos we are considering having it changed back to this style. Would that affect any of these decisions or cause the home to favor a certain style more? And is changing it back to this recommended? Unfortunately, this is the only photo I have possession of in it’s original state so you may need to zoom in to see the details.

I'd go back to the column spacing in the original porch. It looks colonial to me.

Here's a red brick ranch with light gray roof like yours with light gray trim on porch. This would soften the contrast with the brick. Note the softening effect of the landscaping.

Consider creating deep curved planting beds to soften the wide, straight lines of the house.

A classic door in red:

If the house is traditional inside with traditional "colonial" casings and such, I would do the 6 -panel door. If the doors inside are slab, I would do slab, with a Small window in it.

The house is a ranch with a "Georgian Colonial Revival" style superimposed on it. Colonial Revival details were very popular with buyers so builders used them a lot. It didn't matter that it was a ranch. They used them.

In any case the 6 panel door got used a lot in houses of all different styles in the middle of the 20th c. It and slab doors are basically the two most popular doors used during that time.

The doors with the 3/4 glass are fine, but they aren't more suitable than the 6 panel. Glass doors like that were almost Never used as a front door in the 20th c. until the "McMansion"-"Modern Farmhouse" eras. They have nothing to do with ranch at all. That's what Storm Doors looked like on ranch houses, not the Front Door.

I think this combination of windows and front door..Single door not double…and chunk up the front pillars...add steps across the entire porch.
