Is this the same as we called an hedge apple when I grew up in northern Indiana? It had softball size orange fruit that was in-editable. I only knew them as a large bush. I never knew they grew that large.

Yeah, also called hedge-apple -- fruits are good ammunition for kids playing. Small-sized trees are so because they're either young and/or in very tough/crowded conditions. In good conditions and long times (say 100+ yrs). they can indeed become quite large. There are alot of pics I've seen of large to very large ones. My own in a rock-bed for "soil" has grown almost amazingly fast in only 20 yrs
