Help! what to do with small narrow Living room

last year

We recently moved to a smaller house. Just put in new floors. Up next will be neutral stone around the fireplace and a mantle. We will also be doing white trim. 2 questions
1.Currently looking for the right furniture for the small space which measures 14 x 14.

What do I do with the post and railings? They are here to stay but not sure if I stain them to get rid of the orange tone or paint white.

I would redo the fireplace in stone, and leave all the rest alone. White trim, will not go well in your room. The color it is now, is very nice.

No to white trim, and no to painting the railings white. The wood railings and trim tie in beautifully with the ceiling, and if you add stone to the mix with the fireplace, wood is the way to go here. I don't see the wood as being too orange on my monitor; the tone looks great with the ceiling. What's throwing things off IMO is the gray-ish flooring. Is it LVP? If replacing that with something warmer in tone isn't in your budget, consider a large area rug that will cover a lot of it.

Thank you! The colors may be off in the photos. The wood work is classic red oak from the 70-80’s. Really do not want to paint it would rather refinish. The floor is more of a sand tone. It’s much warmer than the photo. In person no gray

Yea, monitors can render colors differently. Red oak is the wood species, not the stain color.

Regardless, I'm sticking to advice of no white. If you really don't like the tone of the wood you have, you can sand and re-stain but you do need stay in the same tonal family as the ceiling in order for it all to coordinate. Frankly, I'd just leave the wood alone -- it really does look nice.

Before you buy furniture it's good to know what will fit in your room so here's an idea of a layout. As for the railing, I agree with others that it shouldn't be painted white, wait till your fireplace is done before you decide on anything for the colour.

Lower the ceiling fan

Lower the TV

You'll have to be very careful with the size of the furnishings. Look at apartment sized sofas and chairs.

The TV is way too high for good viewing. Lower it for now, and then if you are doing stone - with a mantel? Is the stone going to go further up the wall above a mantel? Consider mounting the TV on a swing down bracket, if you don’t use the FP much. Is the FP wood burning?
Also - definitely plan on moving up the seating - sofa or 2 chairs - facing the FP. Right now the sofa is so far back that it looks like it blocks easy access to the door to your deck? I’m t

They make apartment sized furniture and sectionals with reversible chaises. Perhaps looking into those options might help you figure out what furniture you'd like to put in your living room.
