Help vetting Wolf hood range + accoutrements

Thanks to all the excellent discussions already on the topic of range hoods, I have cobbled together what I think is going to be a good set-up for my kitchen remodel. I'd really appreciate some guidance on range hoods as I put together my project plan for both budget and timing purposes.


Cooktop: 36 inch Bosch benchmark induction

Cooking style: Daily use, all sorts of cuisine, often ethnic, and high heat

Current Duct style: Range hood is against an exterior wall. 6 inch short duct that currently vents through exterior wall.

Climate: USDA hardiness zone 8b. Occasional spurts of very hot or very cold weather but generally mild without severe fluctuation.

Preferences: Low(er) noise level and optimal air quality. I have highly sensitive ears


Proposed liner: 42 inch Wolf 22inch, https://www.subzero-wolf.com/wolf/range-hood/42-inch-pro-hood-liner-22-inch-depth

Proposed blower: Considering the following.

  • 800cfm internal blower
  • 900 remote blower (vent straight out the exterior wall. Neighbor's side has fixed windows and are rarely in the yard. Noise should not be a nuisance to my neighbor.
  • Prefer not to get the inline blower that vents through attic as it will require more construction work/expense through a 2nd story house.

Proposed silencer: Fantec silencer, if it can be used with wither of the above blowers and short duct length.

I plan on hiring a HVAC professional to install everything. I'd like to know if I'm missing anything neccessary and if an internal blower or remote blower will be better for nosie reduction. I could go up to the 1000+ CFM as well if that is the general recommendation. I'd really like help with value engineering my proposed range set-up too.

    As usual, I suggest an actual full power flow velocity of 90 ft/min at the hood entry aperture. This is equivalent to 90 CFM per square foot of entry aperture. Use a blower 1.5X the product of this number and the area.

    Your duct needs to be large enough that the air velocity (at the actual achieved flow rate -- probably 2/3 your blower's rated flow rate) is not over 2000 ft/min. Less noise down around 1000 ft/min can be expected.

    However, the blower blade tip turbulence noise will need to be suppressed by a silencer between hood and blower. Unless you use an outside chase, you will probably only find room by running the duct through the attic. An alternative is to use an oversized blower and run it at modest flow rates that achieve the needed evacuation performance, see first paragraph.

    Thank you for taking the time to respond! Could I please confirm that my understanding is correct?


    One option to minimize noise is to purchase an oversized blower and operate it at moderate speed.

    I'm interested in the following combination: Wolf 42inch liner- 22 depth for a 36 inch Benchmark induction cook top. I chose the Benchmark induction primarily because the largest burner is in the center so the hood can cover as much of the cooking fumes as possible.


    The liner measurements: 40 3/8" W x 12 1/8" H x 22 5/8" D. I'm uncertain what the entry aperature is but based on other discussions, I think the entry aperature is around 450. Multiplied by 1.5 and I'll need a minimum 675cfm. If that is correct, can I confirm that either the 900 remote blower and the 1500 remote blower would work and be considered an oversized blower? I will also ask my HVAC installer if they can change the current 6inch duct to a 8 or 10 inch duct.


    I'd like to operate it a lower speed to preserve my ears. What combination would you recommend in this situation?

    • 900 blower + 8 inch duct
    • 900 + 10 inch
    • 1500+ 8 inch
    • 1500+ 10 inch

    Hmmm. If we use the liner dimensions, ignore any edges as there will be some flow there, and trim the fractions, we get 40 x 22 = 880 sq. inches or 6.1 sq. ft. Multiplying by 90 and by 1.5 yields 824 CFM (rated). So a 900 CFM blower would do for containment given some MUA; larger rated flow rates at lower speed should be quieter. (I think there are 1200s in that range also.)

    But is your duct path presently behind the hood, or somewhere above it? If above, can a 10-inch elbow fit? Can an 8-inch fit. Are you willing to put the blower on the exterior wall? If the hole is behind the hood, then what size hole is available, if any? I seem to recall a recent thread where one commenter noted that the Wolf liners may not allow a rear exhaust.

    You might need to use the 1200 internal depending on fittings space.

    Bottom line: All your constraints combined may lead to a Venn diagram that has no common intersection area.
