Yup. Once you get acquainted with Dark Sky principles you really start to notice how streets, houses, and commercial establishments are lit at night. Washington, DC streets were horribly overlit with high-pressure sodium residential streetlights (that shone in all directions) and tear-drop lights at intersections. These have been replaced with LED lights that produce less light, and are capped to reduce upward light. The result is a much more enjoyable streetscape, darker skies over the city, and residents can even see a few stars.

The dark skys compliant recommended light above will look great!

The one fixture looks impossible to keep clean of all the dust, pollen, etc that will accumulate outdoors.

Are you talking about the one that I am questioning 24 or 36 inch? The satellite looking one? And will it be in appropriate for dark sky approval if there is a roof over it? I’m a bit confused on that. And I’d like to go 36 inch if you would approve.

I love over sized fixtures so I would go with the 36”…I would not use the sputnik style has been so over used and I think you can find better! and I would look for a outdoor fixture if this was intened for outdoor use?

• No because its design will result in light shining outward into the yard and onto walls where it isn't wanted.

Any fixture can be put on a dimmer to control how much lighting you want…I dont feel it has to have light only directed down….some fixtures can give a beautiful cast on the ceiling and be very beautiful at night…have seen many types of fixtures used for outdoor covered areas…have fun get the look you love.

Dark Sky Principles don't care about how you feel and they aren't about "fun".

Well, I’m starting to get it and I like it! I like the entire principal. Thank you for enlightening me so to speak. Now I’ll go look for a chandelier that I’m really taken with for the portico. this is a once in lifetime opportunity for me so I want something that really wows me. Thank you for leading me in the right direction.

I would check out Pottery Barn. They have a lot of exterior lights with clean lines that would go well with all of your front windows.

Oh my if it can’t be fun and fabulous that is a shame..just like market lighting strands..they may not follow dark sky principles but boy are they fun…we have added them to many outdoor spaces…yes life and design can fun and should be….it is ok not to always follow the ”rules”.🤗

Perhaps you should consider that people don't want to see your "market lighting strands" (whatever they are) or your overlit "outdoor spaces" which are neither "fun" nor "fabulous" for passersby who would just like to experience nature's dark sky and see the stars when they walk outside.

Perhaps you've never seen the nighttime sky in it's glory. Maybe you should experience it before you subject more people to your "fun".

I do think I will look for an oversized fun chandelier/pendant for the portico, and there are many choices out there that are dark sky compliant for either side of the garage.

Is there any chance, anyone out there, to tell me I should put light fixtures on the front columns of the portico?

This light fixture will be hung about 24 to 36 inches from the top center of the portico. Here is what I have chosen for the garage and the front door lights.

The portico is covered so the fixture won't be exposed to rain, right? Yup, you can use damp-rated pendant. But the garage lights should probably be wet-rated as it appears they could be. If the one illustrated is not wet-rated, this similar fixture is: Shelter Outdoor Wall Sconce.
