Weather and irregular watering has caused some leaf spotting but since the tree will be dropping its leaves shortly, that is not much of a concern. Just make sure it receives adequate deep watering till fall and winter rains return.

Not all Japanese maples have red leaves and yours looks to be one that does not. I see no sign of any red foliage being present.

It's normal for fall anywhere in the northern hemisphere that JM's can be grown. Mine are also showing signs of seasonal, EOS stress and the beginning of fall coloring.

Even enlarging the photo I still don't see red :-) That just looks like early fall coloring to me. But when it leafs out again in spring, you should be able to get a better sense of what the foliage color may actually be. JM's typically go through at least 3 color changes - early spring leaf out; midseason color and fall color.

Look on the tippy top

I did. That looks like typical fall coloring accelerated by some seasonal water/heat stress. So a bronzey-brown color, not what is considered normal red JM foliage color.

Oh! I saw that one lone red leaf way up on top, trying to be the fall color that might be coming in time for the rest of the tree.
