Thank you for your comment. The painter I hired also said the same ... Solid Stain on the house, solid stain on the deck, and paint on the doors. I will edit my question accordingly to clarify that I am talking about stain and not paint.

Stain comes in a lot of colors ... if I keep the deck gray as well, that's a lot of gray! Maybe a lighter or darker shade of gray than the house would be nice? Or a complimentary stain color? I will look for photos... and thx for your suggestion!

I would not put a color on my deck to coordinate with my home‘s interior. The deck is obviously a deck and it’s outdoors, not a part of my home’s interior.

I would not use any gray at all. So overdone and out of style now (if you care about that). I like wood to be wood-colored - tan, beige, brown, etc.

IMO the nicest is to do the deck floor in the same color as the interior floors so it looks like an extension of the interior . So what are your floors inside ? BTW a deck IMO is anextension of the home .

I love gray stained decks, so I would want it to coordinate with the exterior house color.

The existing blue color clearly does not look good from the interior, but a medium to light gray is innocuous enough that it will be a nice transition from the interior to the exterior. I wouldn't stain it to be the same color as the interior flooring.

My vacation house has light gray shingles on the exterior and the deck is stained gray. It's not too much gray since it's so neutral. The interior floors are natural oak.

I like your suggestion of using a wood toned deck stain to create an outdoor room that's an extension of the interior. My interior wood floors are a chocolate brown, in an interior with gray upholstery, ivory walls, and ivory rugs on a dark wood floor. There are also lighter wood furniture accents, rattan baskets, etc.

Would a darker wood stain deck would get too hot in the summer sun? (Maybe not a concern because I wear shoes anyway ...)

What are your thoughts on a mid or lighter wood deck stain that coordinates with the interior wood floors (choosing a stain with more ashy undertones than red ones) and contrasts nicely /warms up a cool gray exterior?

I think a warm medium wood tone would look great from both the inside and the outside. Agree with you painter that it should consider the fire from interior, bit it doesn’t have to be an exact match to your floors. Your house is amazing!

I love your current house color....keep it a mid-tone gray...it seems to fit this house.

You have a brown roof, also mid-tone, so I would agree with others for a wood-tone deck close to the color of your roof.

The interior floors don't look chocolate brown in the photo, which would imply a dark color? The deck does not have to be an exact match. Don't get a dark stain.

Can you wait to decide until after siding is done or at least until the color is chosen and use the same undertone (lighter or darker) or a cedar shade on deck would tie in roof. I think it’s better to complement the exterior for a nicer flow and any shade that feels natural should work with your interior’s description.

This combo would be lovely.

Grey to coordinate with the exterior- a couple shades lighter or darker than the siding depending on what you end up doing for the siding. It does not need to match the interior but it should relate- the problem with the current green is that it’s Incongruous with your interior and exterior colors.

@HALLETT & Co. Thanks, a few shades lighter would be nice. I agree, the green is incongruous so definitely will replace!

Since it's nothing special, then staining it a color is fine. If it happens to be mahogany or ipe, or another interesting wood, then a clear sealer would bring out the beauty of the wood.

Match wood or Trek wood to roof color. Add planters, flowers in summer, evergreens in winter.

I am wondering why you chose gray for the house. You have a brown roof, and gray siding isnt the best choice. Something in the brown tones, would work much better.

Here's a nice combination of Behr gray paint/stain colors.

You could use Classic Silver for the deck and Midnight blue for the door.

@cat_ky I have thought long and hard about the gray house/brown roof issue ... in theory you are absolutely correct, but I just don't like brown, or the colors that go well with brown, so grey it is.

How about this Sage Gray shown in this Behr Cool Classic Colonial inspiration photo? It would compliment your brown roof better than gray and you could incorporate a deck like one suggested by @housegal200, above. One of the Sage Gray coordinated pallets even includes a blue door.
