can I paint this kind of fireplace? And and the entertainment center?

last year

I am going through the slow process of changing the colors from Wilmington Tan walls to assessable beige. I know my shutters have to be painted, but I’m wondering if I can paint this fireplace and I’d like to paint that entertainment system either a dark brown or white the color change through everything off nothing that I had goes with my home anymore.

I definitely would not paint the fireplace - I would try to think about the room as a whole, you have a new paint color - what about a rug?

personally I would let the entertainment center go —

    Back up?!

Do you love the fireplace? Do you love the shutters? There are plenty of window treatments.

Do you LOVE the entertainment center? Do you NEED it? It is simply a unit attached to a wall.

What is your real style? What would you rooms look like if money were no object?

You don't make "permanent" decisions around a paint color.......!

You decide the look and feel you want in your rooms. You decide a flavor, a feel, what makes you feel great when you enter?

You are not "bound" to either fire surround, The entertainment unit? You're not bound to that, either.

Don't put buggies ahead of your horses.

You have no rugs......no plan, we've no idea what the dream room would look like. Both of these concepts precede paint. Putting furnishings in their best place and in proper proportion requires a measure of the space, all the walls, windows, openings etc. A drawing with dimensions all....uploaded as a jpeg. below: )

I bet there are some other possibilities here that can benefit the layout of your room, introduce additional colors, and modify your paint scheme in a better way.

The TV looks pretty awful above the fireplace and the sofa is super squished. Is there another arrangement for this room? Could the TV go on another wall and the sofa face another direction? If so, perhaps you can then leave the fireplace the current color and figure out another paint scheme.

Where are you placing the shelving unit and what do you want it to hold? The rest of your furniture looks pretty plain and this unit is really super ornate. Are you keeping it because of sentimental reasons, does it really belong in your home?

If you are going to keep the entertainment center, than there should be a tv in it. If you dont plan on putting a tv in it, then, maybe its time, to let the entertainment center go, since it is the elephant in the room. I would not paint the fireplace. I would remove that tv from it though, since it isnt the right size for up there, and it doesnt look good. I do agree, get some rugs, add some color, and maybe you will want a different color walls once you get all your furnishings. The room looks a bit crowded together the way it is, and the colors are a bit boring. I would remove the shutters, and put up draperies in their place.

If you are trying to remove all the early 2000's Tuscan elements from your house then you will need to part with the entertainment center and change the fireplace surround. A lot of fireplace mantels come off pretty easily (easily being a relative term), but I don't know what yours is made of. Is it faux stone or real stone? I think it would look strange in any color not resembling stone, so brown would look odd. I think Accessible Beige is a great color, but painting before everything else is putting the cart before the horse unfortunately. The shutters need to be either your trim color or replaced with something else. Shutters are so difficult to paint I would just replace them.

Hey, Jess, are you self promoting here to drive viewers to your blog? Sure looks like it. I am pretty sure that is not allowed in the terms of usage for this site.

That's the previous owners' entertainment center, IIRC, from your previous post

Since you are changing things to suit your family, consider just donating the entertainment center. It really doesn't coordinate well with your own furniture.

De-Tuscanizing can take a while. It's okay to take your time when you move into a new place.

I find the photos a bit confusing.

I would avoid painting the fireplace surround. It's neutral and is supposed to appear to be cast stone. That finish is always more interesting than plain paint.

You can brighten the walls without touching the fireplace.

I would sell off or eliminate any entertainment center. Select the largest TV screen that is appropriate for the size of your room and the place where it's hung.

Hi RNmomof2 zone 5, Yes absolutely! I am offering a real solution. I've deleted the previous comment so that I am in compliance with the Terms of Usage for this site. Thank you!

To answer the question without self promoting... Yes! You can absolutely paint the entertainment center and fireplace with chalk paint. Google for a How To and there are multiple articles with great instructions. Happy Decorating!

Agree with Beverly. That fireplace surround is killing the room, IMO, and definitely doesn't go well with the color you've chosen. Too yellow in tone. A simple traditional wood mantle would work too.

Couple of thoughts- the entertainment center is a relic of 20 years ago when TVs were smaller. it appears to serve no purpose now. in fact its preventing you from using the logical TV wall for that purpose. The TV does not go above the fireplace. its not the right viewing height and its size looks absurd in that spot. (its size is perfect for the other wall.) i would get rid of the entertainment center.

These are great suggestions I appreciate everyone. I do need to decide more on my style. I would like a tall shelving system where I could close the doors because I have a lot of toy storage, but I could probably sell this and buy some thing that we could actually use much more efficiently, I need to clean out my idea books and decide what I like the most but right now the color of that entertainment center and the fireplace in that sitting room and the color of the stone fireplace along with the shutters is bothering me I just wanted everything with white trim. For some reason, it’s a lot harder for me now to choose like the right color frames for the walls. White doesn’t seem to stand out enough. I’m not sure about a gold and I’m not crazy about the black.. my husband wants to knock out the wall where the fireplace is in the room with the entertainment system and put two bay doors to go out to the pool. The huge fireplace was a gift and it just keeps giving lol

Also, we have two Yorkies and they ruined my last two rugs and I’ve just been hesitant to put a rug anywhere because of them.
