to paint or not?

last year

Considering painting my kitchen cabinets threaded loom and the island crooked river. I don’t hate the walnut stain in my cabinets but realize they darken the kitchen. Other option is keep cabinets walnut and just paint island a different color. Adjoining breakfast nook has green wallpaper. Thoughts???

Would u keep the valance in breakfast nook or change to panels?

I wouldnt worry about dated. As long as its clean, and in great condition, and it functions properly, dated isnt a problem. Most of us would be dated somewhere, because, not all of us follow the trends, that are dated themselves in a year.

I would change the valance to panels in your breakfast nook.

  • last year

I like your valences. They'd coordinate well if you painted your island green. But what do you mean by panels? Drapery or shades? For that spot, I might do woven or off-white roman shades.

For the color blue, I should have said overdone instead of dated. But I'll also push back and say I do think people should care if things are dated, if they're looking to make a change. If someone is going to the expense and inconvenience of changing a room, don't make it look like what was popular 10 years ago, make it current. I don't believe in following every trend that comes around, but unlacquered brass and vintage/antique rugs are classic.

Yes, I was referring to drapery panels, probably a pattern of some sort. I have debated on keeping my valences for $ sake but think panels would look pretty. I also like the idea of woven blinds, as per your example. Thank you again for your wonderful ideas and kind words!!

I would not paint the cabinet doors due to the fact that they are the style that they are, they will still look dated. Not that being of a dated style is bad, just that I dont think painting them would make them appear to be modern when they arnt.

If you do decide to paint them, do hire it out to someone with some experience and equipment and space to do it properly. It is not a job to be taken lightly if it is to be done right. It takes an awful lot of careful prep to not look like a hack job!!! a LOT!!!

Since you asked for opinions............maybe if you want a different look to the cabinets, maybe consider replacing the doors instead of painting. I just dont think that you will gain as much from simply painting them as you might be imagining.

When I put in new cabinets years ago I opted for the slab doors with none of that raised panel stuff. Those raised panels tend to collect dirt and grime that settles on the ridges. I chose solid wood slab and am glad that I did.

No matter how you choose to decorate, please come back and post pictures.

Before you start, pick your paint color, your window treatments or keep them, area rug, cabinet hardware choice, etc. Make a mood Board. See your choices together. Post your mood board here if you feel the need before you start your project. Seeming your choices together, helps you decide if this is what you want.

Agree with @stiley on the green - plus I think it connects with your pretty view out the nook —

I love natural shades so if it were me, I’d do those on the windows

love the hardware change idea + island color change (same as nook wall color?) + runner + new island stools :)

I would add woven wood shades..no fabric valance in the nook they need to come down.

Just a word of caution about inspiration images. If the ceilings in the images are higher than yours, or the images are of larger kitchens with more light you need to remember that your kitchen will not resemble them when it’s done. If the point of all of this is to lighten the space, think about whether a dark green will do that in your space.

You wouldn’t be the first to fall in love with an inspiration image only to realize it won’t work in your space. I love this kitchen. And I have no windows in my kitchen.

Yes good point, my ceilings r 8’ so def something to consider. Agree, that kitchen is beautiful!

Any medium to light green will reflect more light than you have now with the dark brown cabinets…I would paint the walls a creamy white to pull from the countertops…I have seen tiny kitchen redos in dark green or black with white walls and back splash and they look great….you have a nice size kitchen and 8’ is really the average size for most kitchens I have helped with..so have fun and go with green…so many to pick from!

If you decide to paint all the cabinets, make sure the job is done correctly. An excellent paint job will be expensive. A so so paint job, will chip easily

Yes, agree!! Im still debating re painting but def will sand, prime and paint. Not looking forward to the long process/mess!!

Thank you to everyone who gave great input re my cabinets, I decided for now to not paint. As suggested, I painted the island green and got a runner. Someone had commented w a runner suggestion which I loved but wasn’t sure where to find it. Still looking for inexpensive brass hardware. Thank you all again, such generous comments!!

I used Crooked River by Sherwin Williams. I’m hoping it’s warm enough for the wallpaper in the breakfast nook.

Certainly seems like it works with your wallpaper…did you hold the sample next to it? Lovely eating nook..but I cant help myself from suggesting removing that valance..it makes the ceiling look low and blocks all the amazing light from upper window from coming in.

  • last year

Would u use blinds or just leave blank? I appreciate the input!!! It’s very helpful!

I’ve been wanting to add some blue to my kitchen because I have blue/white in my family room; your idea to remove the valance might be a good opportunity to add blue in w the green; maybe change art and add a couple of blue/white accessories and a runner w blue in it?

  • PRO

Renee..yes leave it blank..…add new wall art in blue and green combo…The wallpaper seems to be more of a olive green on my screen.

@Renee Pearl the rug I posted is from Etsy but I can't find the exact link. I did a search for "vintage rug runner" and a lot of nice ones come up. Not sure what size you need, but here are a couple with blue and green.

Yes that’s right it is more olive; I think my current color is a little off, I’ll try a couple others. You are so helpful and kind. I’d love to leave a review on your page. I appreciate your great advice so much!!

Renee I enjoy helping! design is my passion…. Adding the gold hardware will help on the island…your silver handles can pull blue from the paint color….so switching to gold will help pull warmth…are you going to repaint or work with it?

Home Interiors with Ease, re paint, I think I may try a different color; I think it looks too safe for the warmer wallpaper tone.

I did a SW color match with your photo..this is the match online…but you can see no blue undertones in the (Colonial rivival green stone ) compared to Crooked river…get to your SW store and see what they match it with in person.

Do u think it would still be ok to bring some navy in w a more olive toned paint? My family room has blue so I’d love to bring some in the kitchen, even a little

Update: so many generous ppl gave advice re my kitchen dilemma. As stated, I couldn’t afford a designer so this was a mini diy makeover w desire to add blue to my kitchen but keep most things. Here are a few pics of what I did. Painted kitchen island SW cocoon, left cabinets alone but changed hardware. I decided to take down valance, leave windows bare. Replaced canvas in breakfast nook w plates. Added a couple blue accents, new blind at door. May/may not keep rugs at door and sink but everything else will stay. Thanks again for your generous help!!

    It looks wonderful, good job!
