Does this pendant look good in my kitchen?

last modified: last year

I am looking for pendant for over my island and wanted silver metal. However, I am in love with I this one Brass from Crate & Barrel.

Ceiling H 17’ Slopes down to 8’. Location of light head will be 5’ down the slope or 10’ above the counter. This fixture is designed for sloped ceiling.

What are your Thoughts?

How will you install it? From the center of the island, measure vertically straight up to the ceiling. From the photo, looks much too high for that pendant (or any standard pendant). c

@John Liu Thank you for your response, there are rods to extend the length.

Your ceiling SLOPES. You need a conversion capable light at the mount or no way to hang straight.

You can avoid with a chain fixture, or a fixture allowing that mount.

You need to provide a drawing that shows the elevation, the header at left with its track light and all the dimensions /ceiling height especially, length of island, and where the header is in relation to the island.

You would need a slope adaptor, example below.....usually specific to the light

Not sure you have the best look for the island in any case.

@JAN MOYER Thank you for responding, why do you feel this fixture is not appropriate for the island? Can you give other suggestions.

The track light will remain, the pendant will be to the right, I am including more pics.

It is going to feel odd alongside the header wall. Over a two or three year process in this condo? Show the REST of the space and where you are now.

In any scenario, it has to hang straight and you need to know from Crate and barrel, if it is slope adaptable.

It doesn't feel right with counter stools, either: )

@JAN MOYER Counter stools will be replaced. The fixture is adaptable for sloped ceiling. This is a house, the ceiling is on 2 different planes, 17’ at the windows, down to 8’ in the dining area. The track will remain. I would Swag the fixture from one of the existing ceiling pot lights.

(Adding a new light junction box is complicated, due to the distance of the from the electrical panel. )

How big is your island? I'm asking because at 52" wide, with shades less than 5" tall and about 10.6" in diameter, it seems like it might be a bit undersized. Looks like max hanging height is 80" which would put it 40" above your island. (Nothing wrong with 40" - mine is probably that high above my island if not higher, but we're tall and it's a fairly large linear light.)

Mockup below in case it helps (with the caveat that I'm guessing on the island size and trying to compare the shade width to the prep sink.)

IMO th track is not a good idea and I would go check out cable lighting for all this lighting in thta space it is the perfect answer in your type of space . There are tons of heads available so you can do drops where needed and close to the ceiling where needed I use Tech lighting for this . Go to a good lighting store do all LED fixtures for sure .

Consider whether you want your pendant to so closely mimic your hood (upside down T). I think you may just want to keep it simple and do recessed lighting.

@chicagoans Thank you so much for the visual, very helpful. DH doesnt like it, so its a no go. Island is 130” x 43”.

@Shasta We do have recessed lights, I just thought pendants could add more light and add more interest to the kitchen.

We think you might want to take some time to look at other pendant options for your space. Below are a few different kitchen ideas with pendants that might work for your space.

    A couple of things:

    1. have you consulted an electrician about getting power on the vaulted ceiling?

    2. have you thought about how much chain/rod/wire will be needed to bring it down to the right height ( it wont come with enough of either)

    3. thats a massive space to fill. but the angles of the ceiling will complicate that.

For me, its the bar stools. they arent really blending with the kitchen, they kind of look like "they came from the old house"

Not every kitchen island needs pendants over it. I had none over my previous island because there was a large skylight over the island. In my new house, I also didn't add pendants over the island, because I wanted people to look through the kitchen and not have their view blocked by pendants. I did add 2 pendants in front of the large kitchen window, so you look through the kitchen and see the large windows, surrounded by backsplash and the complementary pendants.

I think you are going to confuse yourself and the helpers as you have two threads on this......another more recent?

The reason the track is there? Because the slopes and angle do not beg pendants........it's just too awkward a ceiling
