Bad contractor/subcontractor job.. what to do?

last year

We had our house remodeled which was started 12/2023. We hired an LA-based contractor. It is now 10/2024 and project still incomplete, paid almost 95% of the work and still we have incomplete bathroom (two of them, one is not useable as no shower door, no connection to toilet, toilet tank is way too far to the wall) bad paint job of baseboard, unfinished steps leading to family room, uncovered electrical outlets, uneven ceiling and walls. It has been three weeks and nobody is coming to our house. Our electrical panel has not been checked by city as well.

We have compiled the progress of the work, and have pictures of all the mistakes that must be corrected. It has delayed a lot of events in our house, added stress and frustration. The main contractor does not come in person to recheck the subs work. When i send message to contractor , responses are slow to none.

We will soon resort to more formal avenues for complaints, but i guess i want to get opinions on these issues. Thank you in advance.

Is this a licensed and insured contractor? https://www.cslb.ca.gov/consumers/filing_a_complaint/

If the person is not licensed and insured, then it's on you to deal with it in person.

From what I'm told about the way thieves and pic-pockets are dealt with on the left coast I suspect you've been had. If the company/person you have contract with is bonded and insured you need to brush up on procedure for holding them accountable.

What to do was a year ago, when you did or did not do, your due diligence on this contractor. Once you are in the process, and they have your money, ”forcing” them to do anything is off the table.

3 weeks gone may be an abandon job unless you were notified of missing decisions, etc.

I see your post from 11/2023 asking for advice. So they started 12/2023 and all work is still not complete.

I assume you had a contract detailing your satisfaction with their work and then payment. But....maybe not since there's an uneven ceiling and wall - ouch!

Can you go to their office with a list of unfinished work and if you get no satisfaction - then you know what has to be done.

    Good Luck!

There is no salvaging anything when the give a mouse a rancid cookie spirals out of control, to crash and burn.

If you had only paid attention to the advice of how bad the contractor’s design was from the beginning, and booted him then…. You started the process with a cheap bad red flag contractor selection. He then produced a cheap bad red flag design. Which then went sideways, becsuse you weren't funded to do the job properly, with a good design and a decent contractor.

Why are you waiting to hear what others have to say here. You are just wasting time. Go see a lawyer, and dont sit around waiting. They have had a year, and havent gotten any better, which is most likely because, this is all the better they can do.

Did you choose a licensed and insured contractor is the very first question. If you did, then you have state protection, so your remedy is to file a complaint with the state contractor board. The quality of work is not usually covered by that though, unless industry standards are referenced in the contract. Industry standards are also not what you imagine them to be.
