I don't think that Trout Lily was an id of the pictured leaves. I understood it to be a suggestion for a nice choice of plant which would enjoy similar conditions.

Yes cecily the trout lilies would likely enjoy that spot too. I have a huge patch of them in my forest.

I don't think the back of the leaf is purple enough to be tipularia discolor.

Northern Virginia about 30 miles south of DC.

Well, both Tipularia and Aplectrum are native there, but its still Aplectrum because of the distinct white veination and lack if spots.

Yes, the beeches and tulip poplars around them are massive. We purchased this house last fall (one story to age in place) so we're finding new plants and wildlife. A colony of northern flying squirrels overwinters in our tool shed which is pretty cool.

Cecily, the flying squirrel story is funny because I had the same situation when living in southwest VA -- a nest of them in the tool-shed. They had a family of little ones (maybe 10) in the shed, and I eventually got the little ones on a shelf inside to take grape-nuts cereal out of my hands.
