Help With My Lifeless Bedroom

last year
last modified: last year

Hello all,

Desperately need suggestion on how I can make my dead apartment bedroom look lively. It seems lifeless, I’ve been looking for inspirations online but still dont have direction. I like neutral colors but that also is limiting me to bring more life. Turning for help here to get some ideas.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Your entire bedroom is white and gray. You need a beautiful piece of art over your bed + an area rug that coordinates with it. Once I had those two items, I would decide about a new (warmer) paint color for the walls. I would also buy some colorful accent pillows with various textured fabrics. Depending upon the windows, I would add some drapes to introduce more softness to the room. Maybe add another throw at the bottom of your bed.

I wouldn't have two lamps on your left nightstand. New shades for your lamps?

IMO go find bedding you love neutral does not need to be boring. The lamps are too small and please if those are fake flowers no way . I agree wht is the reason for the 2 lamps ? I happen to love gray bedrooms very neutral and this one is not the least boring .I see a ton of nice bedrooms in your idea books maybe neutrl is not what you want that is why you are havin trouble . Can you post a pic of your living room thay migh give us more info as to your style. Post the pic here in a comment

Your ideabook photos show punches of dark colors with wood accents in neutral bedrooms. Try a navy or forest green throw on the bed. Change the white silk flowers to something more colorful. This photo is from your ideabook.

To make your room a little livelier, add a bit of color, pattern, texture. No artificial plants.

Here's a dreamy watercolor skyscape print from society6.com with a palette that would bring in some color you can echo in a throw or rug.

Add a rug in grays, ivory, gold.

Add a knit throw to the foot of the bed in a color from the rug or art work you choose.

    Change your accent pillows.

This is the reverse of what we usually see - you don't have enough "stuff" . The room looks unfinished. To get the best advice, post pics of all angles of the room.

Personally I like color, so I would find a fabulous art piece to hang over the bed and draw colors from there to add to the space.

However, Patricia's picture of the gray bedroom is really beautiful. The right amount and right sizes of "stuff" .

I always like a plant in a bedroom as well - good for the air and adds that natural soothing touch,

Find one or 2 items at a time, then see what you think.

    Good luck!

    Hi,

Thank you for all the wonderful feedback. The double lamp was a temporary thing, I didnt have bulbs for the other lamps so I kept it there as the room is still work in progress. I wasn't sure about keeping the lamp set. You’ve gave me something to think about and ideas to work with. My idea book is from many years ago, maybe 8-10 yrs, I forgot it was there. Its seem like I shy away from color now compared to when I was younger. I like the idea of keeping it gray and adding pops of color in art and accessories or keeping in neutral but adding more texture and design to the space as the inspo Patricia posted.

I am posting a pic of my living room (also incomplete and work in progress). It is in the same state as my bedroom, no color and fake flowers.

Working on decorating my whole space for the new year now that I have decided not to move.

You mentioned you added living room--don't see it. Anytime you post a Dilemma, provide photos of all four walls of the space. Gray is very popular, but it needs some richness or some color. Natural warm wood tables/chairs, caramel leather armchairs/sofa, can add some glow to a gray room.

Notice the warm wood coffee table , bookcase, and wood legs on the furnishings that balance the cool grays and blues in this room. The art work looks great against the gray, but it also has those warm golden tones. Colorwise, everything in this room connects.

Get a large art work for over the sofa in grays, brown, and golds. Same with the sofa pillows.

This is a great palette for you. Add gold pillows. It's also from society6.com, which I often recommend when people haven't bought art before. As you develop your taste, you'll find other sources. But you can order prints in many sizes at affordable prices.

Or if you want to just keep to gray and brown, then get a bold art work like this that suggests the outdoors and has a lot of texture.

Add color like pillows in red or yellow, green or pink.

I'd put something on the wall with the bed. It can be neutral if it is bold. I happen to like color and would urge you to add some color. I'd say that bedroom badly needs some red, but that's me. If you want to go in that direction, start pretty small, like pillows or a throw.

That said, you can get a lot of ideas in neutrals by search houzz for neutral bedoom photos. And many of them look quite lovely, even if most could really use a pop of red.

Even burgundy with gray can go well and looks sophisticated.

Art & rug will add coziness or color for you.

I honestly love monochromatic neutral rooms but they need textured elements, or metal or mirrored accents and a plant or fresh flowers to accent them.

Your bedroom has a beautiful modern foundation with the tufted headboard and clean lines! To add life while maintaining the sophisticated neutral palette, consider these layers:

    1. Texture is key for warming up neutral spaces. Add 2-3 handcrafted embroidered pillow covers in subtle patterns with metallic thread details. The artisanal embroidery will add dimension without disrupting your color scheme.
    2. Create a cozy seating area with a handmade leather pouf at the foot of the bed. Choose a light tan or warm gray to complement your existing palette while adding organic texture.
    3. Add visual interest to the walls with a handwoven round mirror; the natural materials and circular shape will soften all the straight lines while reflecting light.
    4. Group decorative items on your nightstands using handcrafted brass or silver trays. The metallic finish will add warmth and help create intentional styling moments.
    5. Consider a handwoven area rug with a subtle pattern to anchor the space and add softness underfoot. Even in neutral tones, the texture will add significant warmth.

These artisanal pieces will add soul to your space through natural materials and handcrafted details while maintaining the sophisticated, clean aesthetic you've established.

Thank you all for the great suggestion. I am working on figuring out my new bedroom color palette and looking for art and other accessories based on the recommendations.

In the meantime, can anyone please help me understand, what is an appropriate lamp size when compared to the scale of a headboard? Is the lamp suppose to be taller or visually aligned in height to the headboard or actually smaller? Any ideal shape when it comes to lamps on the nightstand?

    Kind regards,

    Sara

@Alice Yes, I think my budget will allow me to add a rug and large art at a reasonable cost. I am open to adding new bedding and lamps also. Unfortunately since the holidays are around the corner, its not the best time for me to update the bedroom furniture but I am definitely open to the idea.

    How about wallpaper?

Bringing a room to life doesn’t necessarily have to be through strong colors. Creating an overall layerd effect with some pattern and textures (that resonate with your taste) are key. Start with a rug you love, build from there as decisions will be much easier.

Regarding your question about lamp height, there are a number of considerations, including scale. https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-pick-a-bedside-lamp-350459?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=shareurlbuttons

I am a colour person… but I think you’ve done a great job with your rooms and if you’re wanting that kind of pallet there’s no point in forcing yourself to insert bright colors. You’ve gotten some great suggestions on here about adding texture and artwork.

Doing walls will be key but it takes time to find things that you like and as an artist I encourage you to put things on the walls that you love because that will make a big difference as to how you feel about the space.

Yes, try some wood to warm things up like a tray….about the silk plants… not every space has adequate lighting for plants and I’ve seen faux plants used very successfully on a number of threads here on Houzz! There’s definite advantages to silk…not everybody wants to be looking after potted plants.

With the abundance of inspiration rooms you can find on the internet I'm sure you can find something that is doable for you. How about this bedroom. Even a canopy over the bed should be something you could have installed without altering the apartment walls and ceiling much.

I love me some grey and neutral colors, but even I agree that you might enjoy having more color.

I wouldnt put down rugs, They get dirty and have to vacuumed. And I would never in this world advice anyone to go to a home decor store and buy sofa art of any kind. That always looks like hotel stuff. UGH!

You can buy nice art prints at museum shops and that would be a better alternative, in my opinion. I would not put anything on the wall above my bed. I would be afraid of it falling on me.

That actually happened to us recently. Hubs heard a loud sound that woke him in the middle of the night but did not see what happened. When I came into the room in the morning, there was a very large framed piece than had fallen from the wall and was lodged in the couch! It was professionaly framed and had been on the wall for years. Until suddenly it wasnt. I would never hang anything of any size above my bed!

But keep it as simple as it is. It is calming and serene and you mostly sleep there anyway. I dont see any point with needless decorations just for the sake of filling empty space.

Give it a pop of color on the bed with something other than gray and throw your clothes and stuff around as if you owned the place! Well, not in a messy way. It looks so impersonal but sure you made it that way to share with the world. I see some who dont even bother to clean up when they take photos to share with the world.

I'm a neutral fan but agree your space feels a bit morgue like. Throw in a rug, shams with a tiny bit of pattern, and hang a piece of artwork and you are done. All of the bones are right. You don't need to pick this apart and redo anything. Just make simple additions.

I like every choice you made for your bedroom. Some people like piz-zazz in their rooms, other like calm. Yours is very sophisticated and relaxing. But I think it could use a couple of things to bring it 'alive'.

Consider a small bed pillow to sit in front of your current ones. Whatever color you like.

Have you ever heard of a 'mola'? It is an artistic fabric piece made from many layers of cloth, each layer folded under on the edges to expose the colored layer beneath. I can envision a mola pillow brightening up your room, perhaps with an antique oriental/Persian rug underneath the bed.

Here's a mola pillow found on Etsy (as is the rug). The red tones would totally enliven your space but any favorite color would work as well. The prices on these are crazy good. Just $42 for this hand-crafted pillow with stuffing and less than $200 for the rug - but these are only to give you an example of how two accent pieces can change the feeling of your room. There are many designs for molas on Etsy and if they aren't a style that appeals to you at least they are fun to check out. Any beautiful throw pillow (with color) and a coordinating rug under the bed will brighten your room.
