To beam or not to beam…

last year

We are renovating our home that was built in 1985 (and hasn’t been touched since 1985.) We have plans to paint, reface the fireplace + add a mantel, update the lighting, install mid-dark tone wood floors in the main living area, and update the window treatments. We are unsure of what to do with the existing beams. They are not structural, so we could remove them, paint them, or refinish them. My husband thinks thta because of all the knots in the wood, they are not worth refinishing. Our fireplace inspiration can be found here: https://www.houzz.com/photos/query/stucco-fireplace. Thanks in advance for any ideas and advice!
