what are your thoughts on my kitchen runner?

I've been trying to replace my kitchen runner with something that compliment my busy granite... it hasn't been an easy task! After many failed attempts, I found this outdoor runner from pottery barn. I originally wanted a faux jute/sisal rug but haven't found one in the size I need. What do you think?

I like it. I’m pretty sure I like it a lot better than the bit of current rug I see peeking out at edges. This new one is similar in tone but ’brighter’.

ETA: as far as going with your ”busy granite” it’s a great pattern. Your granite isn’t busy - it’s granite. 😊 Treat it as a solid when trying to add textile patterns. Those are different than adding a busy backsplash. This rug you’re looking at is very quiet pattern wise & is really nice with your flooring.

Thank you for your response KW! I actually like it a lot ... but I was unsure if the design is too much or not.

I like it not too busy and you chose some colors off the countertop. If outdoor runner should be easier to clean.

@Ac Lb - I added another note to my original post - crossed with your reply. Go with your gut response to this rug. I know how hard it is to find just the right one!

Thank you for responding Katherine! I think I'm starting to think this will work!
My husband likes this runner more, but I think it looks awful!

Thank you for your advice KW! It's greatly appreciated!

I think the one you picked is nice. Sorry to your husband, but I don't like the runner he chose!

The runner your husband likes - I like it too but not in your kitchen. The colors are too muddy & it looks dull on your floor. Also, I can say from experience that you all will be tripping a lot on those end fringes! It’s a much cleaner look to have finished ends in a kitchen.

Thank you KW and Paducah! You've convinced me to follow my instincts and keep this runner.

I really liked the one you picked. Sorry to your husband. The colors are good and it bridges the two sides of your kitchen nicely. I think it helps tone down the business of the counters.

I know this has nothing to do with what you posted about, but your black hardware against the white feels really busy to me alongside the busy counters. It would all calm my nerves to see chrome or polished nickel hardware on your white cabinets.

The one your husband likes is fine, but yours looks so much better to me. It looks brighter, fresher, and just really does enhance the setting. Really nice!

Lol., love your rug choice! I've learned over 35+ years that my hubby's opinion doesn't need to impact every decor decision I make. We have different tastes, and I know that. Of course, if it's changing floors or big purchases he's involved. But choosing a rug - that's like him asking me my opinion on what brake pads he should buy for his car, lol.

Sorry I do like kitchen runners , maybe anti fatigue mats but runners to me are just a tripping hazard and one more thing for the laundry

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, so when your client wants a runner, you're of no help. Lol.

Thank you so much for your input! I truly appreciate it. I always over analyze and second guess my decisions. You've helped me tremendously! I'm keeping this runner!

When my clients want one we do an antifatigue one they make sense thin little runners are tripping hazard and so no is my answer . If they want one it is up to them to do it after I am done

I definitely like the rug you’ve chosen, I feel like your DH’s choice is a bit too grey :)

Whatever you choose as a final selection make sure it is washable.

I find this one is much nicer with your granite, hopefully it is washable.

I always have a runner at my sink. I like the one you chose. Just make sure you can wipe it clean. (Or buy a Ruggable, which can be thrown in the washing machine).

I also agree that antique brass hardware will complement your granite and cabinets nicely. I have granite and love it. It’s indestructible!

A little too much beige, IMO. Can you find a jute/sisal runner that has an element of blue or green in it?

I want to thank everyone for your input!
Sabrina, I bought several jute rugs. They were too thick for my space and I've read they're difficult to clean. I do love the look of them though!

Sabrina, this was a runner I was looking at, but read that it was difficult to clean.

Thank you ladies!! I'm very excited. I just removed my old rug and noticed there was a film underneath it because there wasn't a rug mat underneath. Luckily I was able to clean it up, Definitely going to order a rug mat for this one!

"When my clients want one we do an antifatigue one they make sense thin little runners are tripping hazard and so no is my answer . If they want one it is up to them to do it after I am done"

I find just the opposite is true.

The beveled edge, the cling to the floor of the vinyl...of the anti fatigue?

I nearly knocked my own teeth out in a clients kitchen, and haven't put one down SINCE.

Ps? She hardly cares what you like.....or do not. She likes a runner.

I wanted to replace our sliding door rug with a smaller version of our runner, but I didn't love it, I'm wondering if you think a jute rug would work and compliment my runner. If not, what would you recommend?

I think the one you picked looks great.👍🏻 I know someone who has a seagrass runner in her kitchen (from Ballard Designs). To clean, she takes it outside and hoses it down. Works beautifully as long as the weather permits drying outside.

Why do you need a "rug" there at the deck exit? Put down a small black step off mat for rainy days. The deck isn't "dirt" : ) or grass.

My husband likes to have a rug to protect the hardwood floors.

"My husband likes to have a rug to protect the hardwood floors. "

You are only stepping in. They are floors and meant to be waked ON.

You sweep or vac regularly, you wipe up spills, and wipe your feet.. They aren't sacred, or deserving worship and reverence : ) beyond that.

@Beverly- I did purchase a ruggable I thought would work, but it clashed with my granite. I was really disappointed as I loved the design!

The question timing is perfect. Today I said no more kitchen runner. washing. drying. shaking out. tripping. trying to find right size and weight to be able to wash. I feel liberated to walk on my hardware floors! I keep a towel handy to wipe up drips and spills. However, you be you.

I love first runner from Pottery Barn. Please not one from Jan...too dark, too much drama!

I’ve always had a wool runner in my kitchen at the sink. They clean up the easiest and look good.

I would avoid textured products - like jute - mostly because they’re a pain to get food bits out of.

@chloebud is your friends sea grass rug a performance rug or regular sea grass rug?Update: Unfortunately my husband hated the pb kimmy rug as he thought it was too gold😩. So I'm back to square one. We both like the look of a jute rug. I have found a performance rug that looks like a jute rug at crate and barrel. I'm hoping this will look good and be easy to clean.

I like this one^ much better than the Pottery Barn rug.

    Thank you so much!!!

I still like the idea of a vintage wool runner. It adds more personality than a solid beige one, hides stains and is easy to clean. I've had vintage wool runners in our kitchen for 10 years.

But if you do go the beige route, I'd second the recommendation for seagrass. Jute and sisal stain, but seagrass can be cleaned with liquid. I've had one in our living room for years with kids and dogs.

Thank you! I didn't realize you could clean seagrass with water. That's good to know. I do love the look of vintage rugs, but feel like they're too busy with my busy granite.
