I doubt it’s structural. You could try painting the same as the wall color instead of removing it. It may damage the wall.

Timber framed structure? If so, that element is not a chair rail. It is a part of the structure called a girt or sheeting rail. Purpose is to tie the posts together, provide lateral support, support for the exterior cladding and to resist wind loads. No, you cannot remove it.

Thanks everyone! Yes it is timber framed. I wasn’t sure what to call them. They are tied into the upright beams so I believe you’re correct about them providing support. Thanks again.

The reason I was asking is because I’d like to build a breakfast nook but I’m not sure how to do it with the girt in the way of the back rest. Any suggestions?
