Monstera deliciosa and the palm is very likely to be a ”majesty palm”. If so, watch it closely for spider mites.

Monstera looks to have sun burn damage

Thanks for your thoughts re sun damage. The person who bought this plant for my mom seemed to suggest that the dark, dried out spots on the leaves were because the plant was not getting enough direct sunlight (indoors). They therefore told my mom that she needed to put the plant more by the (south-facing) windows in her (Miami) apartment. Were they wrong to say this? Should such a plant only be getting indirect sun? Thanks!

This plant does not want or like full sun. If grown indoors, it prefers bright but indirect light, although relatively tolerant of low light conditions as well. If grown outdoors, it prefers foliar shade, like growing up into a tree.

Thanks. Also, can anyone tell me what the other plant is, that is in the same pot as the Monstera? There appears to be a second plant in the pot, along with the Monstera. It has a very different leaf shape, from the Monstera....

There is no other plant. It's just the younger leaves of the Monstera.

Immature leaves of Monstera are entire, and older leaves develop the 'lobes', eyes or splits. Maybe the proper term is 'fenestrations'.

Monstera deliciosa can take full sun in the tropics. It is a matter of acclimating them slowly to the brighter light. In the jungle they start as a tiny vine, but then climb up a tree trunk into the sun. Throwing a shade-grown plant into full sun will result in a burn. It is unsightly, but not fatal. The next leaves that grow out will be able to take the sun. Here I give mine a half a day of direct sun and I am on the latitude of Morocco.
