Help with ottomans and coffee table and rug

last year

I will attached a rough floor plan of my future living room.

My question is about putting 2 small footstools/ottomans and still have a coffee table in front of it.

I need footrests for comfort to put feet up while sitting on chairs. I have it picked out and ready to order. They are cubes 18x18x18.

The coffee table will be a large oak square, 72" or 68" square.

Facing each other, 2 sofas, 90"x42" deep.

I'm building a low coffee table, not sure how high exactly.

Should the ottomans be lower or higher than that? Or the same height as the coffee table?I can make the ottomans lower than 18" high, I'm thinking 17".

Will it look ok with the 2 square ottomans in front of, perhaps touching, the large coffee table in front of it?

I'm thinking the rug should be 10"x14"

or 12"x15". Not sure about that.

Thanks for your help.

What does the dark line in front of the two chairs represent? Are the chairs jutting into a walkway? A photo would be helpful. It looks like there is too much space between the couches and the coffee table to be convenient to use. I’d consider pulling the couches away from the walls. I also like putting my feet up for comfort, but they do look a bit too close to the coffee table. If you’re set on the size of the coffee table, I’d wait to purchase the footstools and think then about the proper dimensions for the footstools.

I’d say the 10 x 14 rug would be the best size. It would give you a one foot border on each side.

Lower ottomans would be better, if they are the same height as the chair seat it can be uncomfortable to have legs sticking straight out. The coffee table should be approximately the same height as the sofa, again for comfort level when reaching for coffee, etc. If coffee table is wood or metal beware sharp corners that can be hard on shins and small children. I like my soft pouf footstools that are easy to move around and the grandkids love to sit on them.

That coffee table is too far from either couch to be useful. I'd get a smaller rectangular one, and then put the two ottomans in front of the other couch, with an end table for drinks or whatever for that couch.

But maybe I'm not understanding your drawing. Where are the doors to this room? Is the fireplace in the same or a different room?

this is more accurate. i also reduced the coffee table to 60”. its most important to have the footstools for putting feet up for the chairs. 18” between couch and coffee table. yes the chairs extend past the corner of the section of the room. no doors. i can reduce the coffee table further.

Did you intend to include a new sketch with your last post? I’ve just reread your first post and realize now that this is your future living room. Do you have any blueprints yet?

The scale of your drawing seems off. From the proposed ottomans, it looks like one square = 6”. As such, you have drawn in a 42” square ottoman, which is a good size. But your sofas look too small— 66” instead of 90” and I agree, too far from sofa. Coffee table should be 16-18” from sofa. Proposed 68” or 72” for ottoman is ridiculously large and not at all what you have drawn in. Recheck all measurements and correct the scale of your drawing.

The drawing needs to be to scale . First you do the drawing to scale and honestly if you want help some pics of the space too. If this is a new build and not to the point of actual wall board up then IMO too early to purchace funrniture . What works on paper often does not work in real life . Since these ottomans are only serving 2 chairs then I see no issue but those chairs will need to share a table between them since the ottomans will make reaching the coffee table impossible . The coffee table needs to be reachable from both sofas too . Until the to scale drawing is posted here in jpeg in a comment we have no idea Please DO NOT start another post.

I just posted a more accurate drawing. the room exists but only the 2 chairs are in the space, everything else is temporary. of course it will be nice to have a table by the chairs but in a pinch the ottamins with tray can do that.

I dislike how low coffee tables look and function, so I shop for something that is 18" - 20" high.

A modern low coffee table looks silly next to taller transitional sofas, so you need to consider the style and scale of everything.

You need to know the seat height of your chairs to figure out the best height for the ottomans, and you want them just a touch shorter than the chairs to be able to put your feet up comfortably.

A 60" x 60" coffee table is quite large and reduces the flexibility of the space.

I think you might be doing oversized furniture for a room that isn't that large?

    Here is an example.

I don't think they left enough circulation space between the coffee table and seating in this room

I'm assuming the stools are for extra seating, because they would be hard to squeeze into another spot to put feet up. They also look too tall to put feet up.

These make more sense, so they can be moved under the table. This table is probably 20" high.

Another. I think the stools look better being lower (and less important) than coffee table and seating.

There are options you may have not considered. You're not the first person to need ottomans and still want a coffee table. There are solutions out there but you have to look for them. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Your TV screen is mounted too high for this room.

Thanks , im going to lower the ottomans to roll under the coffee table. table 17” high, with a 2” (at least) lip on table…

is 14 1/2” too low for ottoman height and be comfortable putting feet stretched out? can i go to 14”? seat is at 18”.

but even if theyre under the table i need to leave room for them and need the chairs more than 18” away from coffee table.

Another question. the chairs have a very fat cushion on it. i can also get that on the sofas too but i thought to mix it with a thinner seat cushion so its not uniform. And easier to flip cushions. its completely different fabrics.. all 18” high .

ill try to lower tv a little. the room goes into the dining and kitchen and i want to see tv standing at kitchen counter and bench in kitchen as well.

It makes sense that the ottoman height be less than the lounge chair seat height, but keep in mind the construction of the lounge chair with foam and perhaps springs is not the same as the ottoman. They will deflect differently.

    any help would be appreciated.

is 14” too low for the foot rest With 18” height seat on sofa?

Is extra fat cushion on chair ok with thin/normal seat cushion on sofas? or go with the same?

    thank you
