shutters or not?

We just got new siding and also white trim around all the windows. DH thinks we need black shutters just on the two small windows on the second floor. We will remove the old shutters on the large 1st floor window and will not put shutters on the double window above.
Corner pieces on the siding and the garage doors will be painted to match siding color when the weather permits.
On the Hardie Board website they show a house like this with the 2 shutters.
I think it’s a personal choice but would like opinions please.

    I wouldn't add shutters.

Thanks, FYI the roof is black without the snow.

I Def think you should have shutters on the upper windows in particular but good ones, not dumb ones

I would take off the shutters on the lower window and not add them to the 2nd story - if you want to add interest to the home, invest in a pro landscaping plan (you can install yourself if budget is an issue)

Shutters are not decoration; shutters are part of the architecture of a house. For instance, a center entrance Cape would have two windows on each side of the house. Shutters are perfect for this house. It is part of its history, used for protection and protecting against a storm. Operable, with appropriated hard ware, made of wood, a shutters are meant to close and cover all the glass in the window. Vinyl shutters nailed to the house, are so wrong.

So, the only windows that could accommodate shutters are the two singles, and that would look foolish. Your house was not meant for shutters.

Thank you for your definition of shutters. In the area where I live it is very common to have useless shutters on all sizes of windows.
I understand that doesn’t make it right.

Shutters can be a touchy subject among pros and us common folk who see things from a practical decorative standpoint and not necessarily a functional purpose causing them to say it's wrong. If the look is appealing, I say go for it.

Can you AI it for yourself? I agree with @jackowskib - it’s all just personal choice.

I wouldn’t put them up there if it were my house because I like the clean look. But they would look just fine.

Oh I wish I knew how to do that! The shutters are here and scheduled to go up whenever weather permits. Thank you, great idea.

This is how the house looked before the new siding, and snow. If I got the picture uploaded right. And thanks for all opinions.

Personal choice. I like your house with and without shutters. I like without a bit more (with lower level shutters removed) as it is a clean updated look. Consider leaning into it and replacing the white posts and scallop trim on the front landing. ETA: consider replacing the white arch trim over the garage doors too.

Great idea on the posts and scallop. We have lived here over 40 years and you just get used to how it is.

The problem is that you are doing half of each idea right now. Go “full in” with the shutters, or none. Honestly, the house looks great with the shutters post by @ram123, and none would look great too.

Your house looks beautiful with the new siding and refreshed trim! I’m also on the ”no shutters” team. But have you checked under the shutters on the lower level that you plan to remove? I hope the surrounding brick hasn’t faded, leaving a darker brick impression under the shutter. This happened to my sister’s house and they had to keep shutters attached that they didn’t want 😣

Is is too late to return the shutters? I like the more contemporary look without them. I would also remove the lower shutters already installed.

The new color is terrific with the brick.

Thank you, not sure on returning but I wouldn’t let that change things if better without. I wasn’t very involved in the planning and now I’m jumping in.

Thanks for the info. The before and after photos are profoundly different with and without shutters. Like the house is in the current Century without them.

No, shutters on just two windows would look odd and throw off the balance. Shutters were once practical and useful--in the north they would be solid and able to be closed over the window to protect against the elements. In the south, they would be adjustable louvers-- to shade against the harsh afternoon sun and closed to protect from the wind and rain. Having windows that are too wide for shutters to cover completely defeat the purpose of shutters and the shutters just become a "fashion accessory".

Your first photo looks great with the new siding and white trim. Definitely no need for shutters, including the lower, largest window.

I do not mind shutters for purely decorative purposes but, with this house, I would not add them. Because you have a lot of texture already. The paneled look garage doors, the arched headers over the garage doors, the scalloped fascia on the porch, both brick & stone siding, lap siding and shake shingle look siding on the gable end. Shutters on this house would be overkill, IMO.

FWIW, I 'think' I would not paint the corner boards or garage door trim to match the siding. I like how the corners tie into the rest of the trim. Might change my mind if I saw a mock up but don't think so.

No. Your home looks great without them.

Shutters (fakes one) are mostly for CHEAP houses and mobile homes. If you want to install them, use real workable shutters that you could close in a storm (and that are very expensive), or NONE at all unless you want the house to look like a cheap mobile home or like some idiot decorated it.

I would paint all the white trim around the windows to a darker color. The lightest color is what pops and where the eye goes and window frames should not be the focal point of this house.

Yes to shutters. I think they look great. Shutters ARE decorative!...and your house looked great with shutters. It added interest.

Fake Shutters are NEVER a good idea!!!

No shutters, and I agree with squaring off the arches and maybe beef up the posts a little. Your home looked fine with the shutters, and since they are purchased it isn't a catastrophe if they are installed. You mentioned these were common in your neighbourhood, so possible future owners may expect them. Your home looks very nice either way.

Put shutters on. Looks more majestic.

No shutters. Your house looks very clean without them. I can't tell what color your front door is but if you want to add interest, maybe paint the front door. That said, I think the siding and white trim are all you need.

The house looks great as is. I would not add shutters.

It looks way better without the shutters !

Handsome looking house. it looks familiar to me. What part of the country do you live in?

I would not add shutters to this style home. It's beautiful as is. I would paint the door a color that pops and have tall planters in a hue similar the doors color scheme on both side of door. A colorful outdoor area rug will draw your eyes to the door.

    No to shutters!
