Looking for a medium light taupe paint color

our kitchen has black granite countertops, butter-cream cabinets, oil rubbed bronze hardware, taupe backsplash, and taupe flooring. we’ve never liked the color of the cabinets so after 15 years we are now planning to repaint them.

we’ve been looking at and buying color samples since September but still haven't found anything that works. because our countertops are black, we‘re focused on matching the taupe tiles. the undertones of those tiles range from red to a very light gray - the darkest of the tiles are similar to farrow and ball charleston gray while the lightest are similar to blackish. it’s not hard to find a color to match the dark hues, but husband prefers lighter colors. we could go with blackish, but i’m not sold on it. right now, we’re considering benjamin moore venetian marble or a la mode. both fall into the off-white category, but i’d prefer something in the medium light range. i’m also concerned that the those two colors will be too pink or too violet - especially since our kitchen has limited natural light.

i’m wondering if anyone has an opinion on venetian marble and a la mode or could point me to a medium light taupe that isn’t too pink or blue?

The black is not the issue it can go with almost anything. IMO taupe is a dated color and a bit drrab too. What color are you painting the cabinets and are you into changing the backsplash and the hardware / To me the black is easy but the shades of taupe always hard so change as much as possible of the taupe then see waht color for walls Lok atwhite for the cabinets not aanother shade of taupe and start getting out of the taupe box

find an image somewhere.....magazines or internet or a showroom ..... and take it in to your custom paint store that provides service........the digital replication is giving close to perfect matches these days. I find taupe an interesting, fabulous color. Taupe shades vary however. You have to produce something in an image and go somewhere and you'll get the correct assistance. I painted several doors in 3 rooms a year ago. I brought paint card samples and taped them up and looked at them for about a week in various light situations and took the best and had the store reduce the intensity by 15 % to get exactly what I wanted. It is a bit of work since you dont know exactly what you want.....thats a handicap so start with your own work of narrowing down the field of color tones..... I had probably a couple dozen paint swatches and it got narrowed for the final result..... Im quite happy with it.

We cannot recommend a paint color based on what you verbally describe the finishes to be. YOU HAVE TO POST PHOTOS OF THE AREA!

Finishes are described in my initial post. black granite counter-tops and taupe tiling for the backsplash and floors. we have no intention on changing those elements. what we’ are looking for is a paint color for the cabinets that will work with both the black countertops and the taupe tiling. our thougt is that a light taupe could work to add some cohesion to the space. we’ ve been looking at off-whites within the taupe color range, but im hesitant to commit - mostly because i’m not fond of it.

i’ve spent so much time sampling colors (to see if they work in the room) and looking at photos online that i am suffering from sensory overload.

i’m open to colors that are not taupe but my concern is how it will tie the room together. right now i feel that the color scheme is too eclectic.

Here’s a photo of our kitchen in its present state.

Thanks. The trim and moldings in our home is painted linen white. we have talk about going with that color if we cannot decide on an alternative. my main concern is that linen white is too yellow.

In the photo, your backsplash tile looks gray, not taupe.

The flooring looks pink-ish. Is that staying or changing?

From the photo, I would say the outlier is the backsplash.

The very first think I would do is change out your bronze hardware for nickel, polished nickel, or chrome. (Even swapping them from just around the range and replacing with some Home Depot for now will help.) .And play around with the color of your light bulbs too, which may be effecting how you see color. These two factors will hugely change what you currently think of your kitchen. And, they will also change the impact you are seeing when you look at paint samples. Not to mention that a more reflective metal is going to pick up on the greys in your backsplash and is going to bring more light to your kitchen.

I disagree with Patricia - I think taupe is very popular right now. But, I think you have to give up finding a color that matches your floor or backsplash and instead look for one that complements it. The problem with your current cabinets is not that it is a light neutral but that it is either too yellow or is reading too yellow next to your black and with your lighting. (My cabinets are linen white and look nothing like yours. Context and surrounding is everything.)

I'd try Maritime White because I love it with almost anything. (I originally used it to paint my kitchen walls because it matched the existing backsplash, then loved it so much I got new cabinets painted that color.) Also see what you think of Pale Oak.
