Plant Tag question.

First of all, I know this is a plant from a BBS and I know they don't always follow the rules but over a year ago, I bought a mugo pine and a year later I bought another mugo pine.

The front of both tags appeared to be exactly the same. Nothing to identify the variety.

The back of the tags also appeared exactly the same except for the mature height and width.

Is there any way to figure out why there's such a big difference in the mature heights?

Front side of tags:

Everything is the same, even the UPC number.

The mature height and width are way different but I don't see a variety name. :-?

The lower back side only has a couple of differences.

Now if I look closely to the numbers at the very bottom to the left, one has a three and one has a twelve and the first outlined number to the right aren't the same number on each tag. The copywrite for the tags are different years but that's nbd.

They don't care about the cultivar , and probably sold fewer plants with the taller growth stated

Yeah, probably so.

Or someone enlightened them that only the 'tannenbaum' gets to 20 ft.

The two Mugos appear to be different types. The first one has long needles and grew ~3" its first full season. The second one has shorter needles, but I won't know the annual growth until next Fall.

Thanks!

" Is there any way to figure out why there's such a big difference in the mature heights? "

Mugos come in a vast range of heights, from dwarfs that may never exceed 12" tall to full size trees of 20-25 feet. I'd assume the BBS uses very generic tags and with no reference to a specific cultivar. Most reputable growers tag their plants before sale to resalers but cut rate growers - those that typically supply the BBS - often do not, so what you actually get may be up for grabs.

Moral - buy from a proper nursery or garden center that correctly labels their plants. 😁

I generally do that. But needed something to spend my 11% rebate on. ;-)
