Please help me furnish this home!

I have a new build that needs living room and dining room furniture. The living room area will have a TV on the wall and some pieces of furniture in the middle of the floor creating a sort of room. I’m trying to figure out if I should have a couch, love seat and recliner or a couch and two recliners or some other combination for the space. I am grateful for any thoughts/ideas.

This is from the opposite wall from the one above.

This is looking past the kitchen towards the living room.

Please post a drawing of where you want to hang the TV, where you want the dining area, and the measurements of the space.

How many people live in your home and watch TV here regularly? How many do you need to seat? I hate love seats. They really never sit two people comfortably.

If you get recliners, be sure you measure enough space behind them to tilt back. It does chew into your floor plan to accommodate them.

We need a floor plan with dimensions.

I love the colors in that first rug BeverlyFLADeziner posted with your cabinet, floor and wall colors. Assuming you have the space, this layout with the couch facing the TV and the window wall left open might work for you.

In second kitchen pick at bare wall will be a dining table.

Patricia!!! Stop yelling in all caps, please, at people who are posting here for the first time. You can politely ask them to post pictures and floorplans in this thread.

Use the paragraph space separation to add emphasis. Like this.

Your yelling format is embarrassing to the rest of us.

Making a scale floorplan of your space will allow you to draw and cut out scale pieces of furniture. And you can move and arrange them around the floorplan. You can see traffic flow lanes and measure clearances. You can use the manufacturers dimensions and try different size couches, tables, sectionals and anything.

Beautiful home, beautiful space. I think it would be worth your while to hook up with a local designer who can actually be in the space with you and talk about your style and preferences. There’s a lot to furnishing a space from scratch, and I know from long experience here you’ll get conflicting opinions, which may just be confusing. My advice? Find a person that you can work with in real life.

And preferably someone who is not working for a furniture store, keen on commissions!

I love that there are lots of conflicting opinions here. You get to weed out the ones you don't like and gravitate to the ones that make the most sense to you. Once you post a little drawing with measurements and answer some more questions, you'll get great advice here.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I have tried to post the measurements on this section of the original blueprints. Hopefully my scribbles are understandable. Is that enough information to get an idea of furniture layout?

By the way, the walls are SW Sea Salt.

Here’s a look at 13’ x 13’ grid overlaid with a 9’ x 11’ rug, and how furniture might be laid out. It looks like the max size for a rug is about 12’ x 12’ if you want to get more/larger furniture in this space. The couch in this layout is only 7’ wide.

So for this area, would it be better to have a sofa with the back so that it creates an entry walkway? Would there be enough froom for two recliners on opposite sides? Thanks!

    Hi lkreeser!

Absolutely! Called sofa console tables, table in back of the sofa is a classic look in open floor plans! Sometimes they pair with stools if faced toward dining area for extra seating — slightly more ergonomic look.

When used to signal entryway flowthrough, cabinet styling recommended (shelves, drawers, or pull handles)!

Another little secret in creating a cohesive look in open plan — contast piping on your largest furniture pieces! Contrast (here) simply means a detail color, whether in the upholstery, or different

    color altogether.

This little secret allows a variety of patterns /colors/shapes throughout a large space! Framed furniture (visible wood or metal frame or detail) gives you that same freedom!

Here’s the layout on a 8.6 x 11.6 rug with two chairs. You’d need swivel recliners to angle towards the TV and have space to put the footrests up. The TV screen is about 6 ft across.

I’ve just placed a 10 x 9.5 grid in your dining space but it doesn’t fit. Either the drawing is not accurate or the measurements are wrong. Can you confirm the measurements? It looks like you may have included the space under the island overhang.

    lkreeser thanked ffpalms

    Yep I agree.

Ffpalms, the 9.5 feet is to the edge of the island overhang. The island was moved a little closer to the stove in the actual room. We also made the overhang smaller due to the tight space. I was thinking that we would need a narrow dining table in that location. Maybe one with a bench on the back side that would allow the table to be pushed against the wall most of the time. What do you think?

I agree you need a narrow table, but I’d try hard to have chairs instead of a bench. I dislike having to scoot and slide to get out.

Here’s a layout using the narrowest version of this table.

I would add a long bench with dining table against that kitchen wall..consider a comfy L shape sectional sofa for lIving room..it will create a entry behind it and accomadate comfy tv watching for all…once sectional and other furniture is in place maybe add a small accent chair.

I am back with another question about color. Given the open concept and close proximity of the living room to the kitchen, what color furniture would you suggest that would coordinate with the light gray cabinets, the slate gray island and the sea salt walls? Thanks!

Here is a living room with sea salt walls.

thanks RedRyder - thats looks nice. I think that color looks a little light for my space, with lots of kids bouncing around. I wonder what direction I can go and still not clash with the light gray cabinets. brown? charcoal?

It might be helpful for you to browse for a rug you really like that has bits of some of the colors already in your space. When you find one that really excites you, you’ll be able to pull colors from it as you look for furniture. Here’s just one example.

    lkreeser thanked ffpalms

Agree with @ffplams - Fall in love with a rug first. There will be a perfect paint to go with it but it is much harder to find a rug that you want to live with for a long time.

    lkreeser thanked RedRyder

Thank you for the idea about a rug. I believe that will help with blending colors and choosing accent colors. I feel like I need to pick the sofa first since it is the largest and longest lasting investment. Maybe a gray, since the cabinets are gray.

Yes to the couch first, but I vote no to gray. Your couch doesn’t have to be”match” the cabinets, even in an open concept house. Many couches will look good with a gray kitchen.

Navy blue, olive green, or cream are my first thoughts.

You cannot go wrong with a rich olive green couch. The big question is how many cushions do you like? One, two or three?

I’m trying to stay away from blue, but I do love the idea of a shade of green!

With the narrow space in the dining area I would probably do a 40" round table You can get round tables that have inserts to make them oval so that when you have guests you can extend the length.

The reason I picked a round table is so that you can have enough walking space behind the counter stools and access to all doorways.

This is a nice 40" table with extension that will provide seating for 8 when needed

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/1819896135/round-extension-table-with-leaf-and?gpla=1&gao=1&&gQT=1

I placed 3 counter stools at your counter because, in my experience owning an 8' counter seating space the 4th seat made things too tight. I had 4 and the 4th chair was placed in a corner so we could use it if needed, but not kept at the counter on a daily basis.

You have enough room in the living room to do a sofa and 2 chairs or a small sectional or other combinations of seating.

The living space needs to work for how you use the space. How many people are using the space on a regular day. How much company do you get and how often?

Give a lot of thought into what is appropriate for you and your daily activities.

If you watch 2-3 hours of TV each night after dinner the seating needs to fit your TV watching pleasure. Do you like to lay across the sofa on your side and watch tv or do you prefer a chaise or a recliner or just sitting on a non-reclining seat?

A lot of sofas have built in recliners and some are wall hugger types - don't spread as far behind the other seat - more subtle reclining.

If you get full motion recliners and like to almost lay down you may need to adjust the height of the TV so your neck is in a comfortable position when reclined.

If you are more likely to spend your evenings building a puzzle or playing board games and just have the TV playing in the background you may want a very different setup.

Side Note: Please double check your measurements as the pieces are not adding to the full width or length you note, so my drawing may be a foot off in either direction, but close enough to give you an idea.

Thanks Jennifer! I don’t think I want to put chairs in front of the windows. I was thinking about putting a reclining loveseat with it’s back to the bar and a recliner in the corner (bottom left of your photo). Either that, or put two recliners with their backs to the bar. The couch will also be a reclining couch. We would probably not have a coffee table, but end tables where needed. Essentially, I have a 13x13 space for a living room. Do any of these ideas look better than any others?
