Phaseolus vulgaris Fedco pole bean #282

I cannot find this bean anywhere and it is by far my favorite. I found a bush version in 1 place but nt the pole. Ideas? By anychance does anyone have a few seeds I can buy? I can save my own after that. I really liked this bean much better then any others and it was stringless.

The only reference I can find for #282 is for Fortex pole bean https://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/fortex-organic-pole-bean-282

which is available many places but is often out of stock. Is that what you are thinking of? I think you have mentioned them.

Here is a link to an Etsy seller near you who has Fortex seeds

Have you ever tried old fashioned Appalachian String Beans? They are quite good and different from stringless, well worth pulling the strings IMO.

I've got some beans from Etsy from the link below

Thanks! I have tried a lot of beans and my whole family did not like the flavor as much. The added bonus of no strings is nice. Yes the bean you found was it. I have trie other fortex pole beans and they were not nearly as good. 2024 I had no beans I liked and it was dissappointing so I really want to find that one and no go another year dissappointed. I spent a lot of time and garden space last year only to realize way to late I was disappointed:)

I will google and try to find them again but I am hoping for a miracle - that someone here has a few!

I don't understand why you claim that Fedco has a unique type of Fortex, the 282 is the catalog number and doesn't mean anything. All their beans have a catalogue number. You may have gotten a good batch, but it seems rather irrational.

What fresh eating beans have you grown that actually had strings? They are rare to find with the commonly sold beans. Some pole beans might get some strings if you let them get too large, but then the pods get are tough also. Fortex is good as it is still good to eat when they are large. Your family doesn't like modern bush beans? They are always stringless.

The best green bean I have EVER grown is the Commodore Bush. Ihave never liked any pole bean I grew.

Just curious what was different with the non-Fedco 'Fortex'? How many different sources did you try?

I found some burpee seeds on Amazon (burpee is out of stock). You are correct others will have them I just do not want to risk another year of beans we did not like nearly as much. I do not like any strings, nothing at all even when mature. I have tried 5 or 6 other beans we did not like nearly as much and am afraid to keep wasting space trying more.

Order some Fortex from Pinetree, superseeds.com, Pinetree is from Maine just like Fedco. Johnny's does not have them in stock in low amounts.

I'm not sure why you trust seeds from secondhand sources before trusting new seeds from seed sellers, you would rather find old secondhand seeds. You seem obsessed with the "terrible" strings, I'm not sure what gave you problems, why not plant a second or third type of beans, a bush bean like 'Jade', so if one type does poorly, or you get the wrong seeds, you have backups.

I'm pretty sure Johnny's is in Maine, too. I've been under the impression that both Pinetree and Fedco source some of their seeds from Johnny's, which is more focused on commercial growers, so both Johnny's and Pinetree are good sources for beans that came from Fedco. I've noticed that Fedco tends to run out of seeds and get more later, so you can always try them again.

I've never had strings in my beans, although I grow mostly pole beans. I've had a bunch of different varieties over the years, which I've bought from Allen, Sterling and Lothrop (another Maine source), Pinetree or Fedco.
