Dining room needs TLC

last month

Needing to pick some creative brains to help update my dining room after renovation (wood floors color and walls).
I used the black from framed printing wall to purchase rug with black trim. Having a large rectangular mirror made for back wall. May put sconces on each side of mirror.
Now wanting a different dining table and chairs for 8-10. Thinking I need some black, which seems more difficult to find. Love the look of a rectangular trestle table. Though it looks classy, not crazy about cream fabric on chairs because of concern for good stains. All assistance is greatly appreciated!

It's looking fresh and clean! I like the rug you chose for an elegant, clean, classic look. Is the lighting chandelier new and staying? What is the length of current table/how many people do you need to seat?

I'm not usually a huge fan of long, rectangular mirrors on the wall simply because for me, an opportunity to bring in large artwork is an opportunity to bring in personality and connect the dots on a cohesive color scheme. That being said, it could be a really elegant choice depending on frame and style. Do you have any photos of what it looks like? Off the top of my head I would avoid adding sconces along with a large mirror, that seems like it might be too much.

For example, here is a quick mockup of one of 1000 ways this dining room could come together. Personally I don't like the exposed bulbs on your current fixture (I know many others feel the same way) but if you are keeping that, you can pick bulbs with softer and less intense light. This is just the kind of chairs/table combo I would envision and one of the ways this could come together (showing artwork instead of a mirror here; note it does not have a heavy black frame but ties in with some of the softer elements).

Thx so much Melissa. I really appreciate your thoughts.
The light fixture is new, but at full power. I can dim it. The framed mirror will be black. See included photo of frame. I love the black trestle table - just leery of the cream chairs.

I may reconsider and do art instead if the mirror hasn’t been started.

I’d get walnut instead of black table. Mixing black and dark wood tones is a nice rich combo. All black accents and furniture kind of falls flat and feels a bit one note.

Thx Kendrah. Combining walnut is a good idea too.

or select a round table that expands to an oval.

Although photos are helpful, they can distort the perception of a space. A graft paper floor plan with all window & entries to scale helps to know the rooms real space. That said, I wonder if the table would better fit the space if turned 90 degrees. The mirror may work fine however mirrors often things that may not want to be reflected. Such ar dinner guest while at the table. A good piece of art that enhances sets the color scheme is always a plus in any room. No to the sconces!

I support round to oval table, leave it as an oval all the time, and art instead of mirror. Chairs don’t have to be cream or a light color, a print would add color and texture to a pretty monochromatic space you currently have. If you want to stick to the black/white theme zebra print chair upholstery would add to that and art depicting the Savannah (without animals) or any other nature themed black & white, be it trees, birds, etc.

Great! Thanks! I struggle with finding art that speaks to me/coordinates in the room! The room basically measures 12.5 x 11 feet. So filling some of the space of the 12.5 foot wall is the challenge.

  • last month

You can use two or three related art pieces hung as a group; you don’t have to use just one art piece. One large piece may be overwhelming for the space.

    Ok. Thx so much!

Get a black centerpiece for your table. I note your white tablecloth is not a good match for your pale beige room. You can dye it with tea. But, you could also get a black tablecloth which would tell you if you like the look of a black table before you spend the money on one. Or you could get a runner with some black or all black on your white tablecloth

Great! Thanks so much! I love the look of the walnut table and black chairs. I put the black rectangular mirror on hold and will be searching for wall art panels for the back wall.

This table is a family heirloom that my husband is somewhat attached to. (And we paid to have it refinished 25 years ago) I like it better with the table cloth off. If I can find 5 other chairs with similar profile, and put a new fabric on them - would that look okay? Or just get a new oval or Square table and new chairs?

  • last month

I like the idea of a runner - Part of my issue is not being crazy about burgundy shade of wood.

    Thank you for your input!

Okay - I spent some time searching today. I need help with vision. Can you imagine this oval table, dark gray chairs and this wall hanging, which is 4 ft x 5.3 ft, on the back wall? I love the table, but struggling with a great chair. Thanks in advance for all your thoughts!

KEEP the antique table - do not buy new (cheap looking, cheaply made) newer table/chair) unless you buy very high end solid wood - check out craigslist if you do that.

As I see it, the problem is a lack of pattern and color. grapefruit1_arhas the same table and her room looks warm, inviting and interesting. Immediately remove the glaring white tablecloth. It blocks the shape of the trestle. Don't bother with a mirror when there is nothing interesting to reflect. Find the artwork (hopefully large scale) that you will love looking at every day. Replace that boring rug with a richly colored one that has a pattern. Skip the cheesy Wayfair furnishings and update the furnishings that are meaningful to your spouse. Have your chair seats recovered in a small pattern that uses your favorite of the colors within the new rug. You need color and life in this room; don't be afraid to express yourself.

I really like your table and the chairs with the pop of red color. i would pick artwork for the long wall that picks up that color. Maybe a triptych could fill that wall without being overwhelming.

I agree with keeping the table. Perhaps get it refinshed in a wood tone ir color that you like. The tufted high back chairs would be too large and would overwhelm the space. If you must, look for two chairs for each end of the table but still keep in mind the scale to the rest of the chairs and the table itself- nothing too big or bulky looking. Nice chandelier but appears dainty and doesn't complement the room, perhaps something linear running the length of the table. Nice rug, but the black edge feels like you’re in a box. Your floors look nice enough without a rug but if you want to protect them from scratches and damage, a neutral rug (like you already have) without outlining it in black it really shrinks the rooom.

The print you chose is nice, keep measure ts in mind to stay proportionate, so I agree with 3 substatial prints along that wall. You could incorporate the mirrors by adding two on either side of the entrance on the wall directly across from the windows. This will reflect the natural light in the room and help it feel balanced. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the time spent in your beautiful dining room

One more thought! Have you tried turning the table, running it parallel to the windows?

true dimensions of the room are hard to tell from the picture itself

I like the new choices you looked at, but you can't beat the price of keeping the current table. New chairs and losing the tablecloth seem like better choices to me. Once you get some art (no mirrors) then choose a runner off of the colors in the art and go from there. The rug is fine.

Thanks to everyone for your input. This room has been a challenge after renovation. The walls, floor, rug and chandelier are actually new.
There seems to be conflict on mirror vs art work on the wall. I’m also considering a shallow side board on the back wall.
If I keep this table, I definitely need to find 4-5 more chairs of similar scale.
I’m not crazy about the red any more, so I would need to reupholster the chair seats.

  • last month

The table is too long to run the other way. I’m afraid the chairs would end up in the hallway. The room is 12.5 x 11.

Not sure of the dimensions of the room, would a circular or oval table with extensions wok? beige ug nice howeve dining ugs should be multi colo due to the potential fo food and beveage accident. Hmm. compute seems to have developed a poblem with the lette that comes afte q and befoe s????

I would have the existing table and chairs refinished and reupholstered since you don't like the finish. The room does need color and pattern and I would look at wallpaper above the chair rail. It could be subtle or bold, and you could tie in the colors of your rug. I would get two upholstered chairs for the ends of the table. Your husband likes the existing table/chairs and the lines are graceful, so refinish to a color you prefer.

  • last month

Thx Lynne. I appreciate your help! I’m definitely leaning towards keeping the table. Adding upholstered chairs at the ends of the table is a good idea.

Since your husband likes the table, keep it and possibly get new chairs. No tablecloth and either 4 or 6 chairs, not 5. You need some life in the room-for sure art instead of mirror and a centerpiece with some color. If you keep the chairs, use an updated brighter fabric.

I like the antique table and Regency style chairs with red seats. I'd buy 2 large Hurricane candle holders with red candles for the table. https://www.houzz.com/products/greek-key-glass-hurricane-lamp-lantern-set-of-2-candle-holder-vase-prvw-vr~33167095

This is my unprofessional sketch of the room measurements. I am still not confident in a plan. And now wondering if a 66 inch round table would work better than an oval table, because of the chairs not having much room at the ends of the table. I really need seating for 8-10 people. I would appreciate any advise about possible round table. (My hubby is fine w a new table). I will definitely get a different rug too.

  • last month

I have those exact chairs and had them painted black, then recovered with a leopard print. You can find similar chairs for resale most everywhere. I have 8 and they are actually 2 different sets but you cant tell unless you know what to look for.

My main issue with the current table is the high maintenance fragile surface. I want a hard wood surface that won’t show dings, water damage etc. I would have to buy a glass top for this one - I’m not convinced it’s worth the investments, especially when it doesn’t fit in the room real well.

yes a round table would work well. Be mindful to leave a minimum 24 inches, ideally 36” between the chairs and the walls or any other furniture you may ne placing in the room (sideboard/hutch/bar cart etc). Your existing light fixture would also pair well with a round table. would love to see a picture of your final results.

Oh yay! I was hoping someone with expertise would respond. Thanks so much for your input! I was thinking the same thing about the light fixture.

It doesn’t matter what others say…it’s you that have to love it. If you get a new table and chairs, keep them low profile to showcase whatever art you display on that back wall. Put your mirror on another wall where you need to reflect light (perhaps the foyer?). When you select artwork, make sure it’s meaningful to you and not some random thing from Home Goods. Art can be vintage or modern. A home is curated over time and not a showcase.

Here are some visuals for some standard round or oval table sizes in your room based on the measurements you posted above.

    First, a 60" round will seat 6:

2nd, a 60" round but with a leaf that extends it to 60x78; you can now squeeze in 2 more for 8 seats.

Here is a 72" round table that can seat 8. Note that there is a little more room for the chairs, but you are losing some of that access space around the chairs. In this size dining room, I feel like it would be tough to fit any kind of 10 person table, even rectangular. It's just not that large of a room.

    I hope this helps!

Either get a glass top for the table or get a new table. the table cloth looks terrible in your lovely room. (sorry) replace the fake plant with real — or just toss the fake. fake plants are depressing which is the opposite of what you want in a welcoming dining room.
