help with fireplace renovation

We are closing on a 1850 antique, would like to put a propane insert in the fireplace and redo the look- like the coastal stone looks. This house is on a beach road so going for a classic coastal look. Please help, any advice appreciated!

Your fireplace surround is a classic even for coastal areas and given the date of the house. Have fireplace inspected and make sure the fireplace and surround either current or planned meets code. There may be historical experts in your area that can weigh in on appropriate surround for fireplace and other areas,

you have the real deal! Do not mess an original classic coastal house by 2010ing it.

I do agree the FP looks fine as it is but make sure it can function up to code as far as the actual fire part .

A house of that age, with original features that are in good condition, doesnt happen often. Yours looks very nice for its age, please do not mess up that really nice original fireplace your house has. Make sure its safe, and put in your gas insert, but, do nothing to the exterior of the fireplace. Congratulations on your new home.

Talk to a local fireplace store to see what can be done to provide propane gas to the fireplace without destroying a perfectly good authentic fireplace design.

I think stone is going to overwhelm that space. As others have said talk to the experts about converting to gas without losing the charm and simplicity of that original fireplace. So beautiful.

I think stone fireplaces from that era used real stones to build a chimney. They did not apply stone veneer to make things look like they were made of stone.

Brick could be applied easier than stone and still look authentic and whitewashed would be beachy. I agree the ceiling is too low for stone anyway.

No to the stone. Ceiling is too low.

Once you get a price for an insert, a hidden propane tank and the labor for it all perhaps you'll consider simply staying with the existing wood burning fireplace. You can purchase a lot of compressed fireplace logs at a reasonable price and use what you have.

Where do you plan to place a TV in this room?

Please leave the fireplace as is. You already have a coastal look within the bones of the home. Respect the homes age and heritage before you make changes.

You could face the wall in seashells

Or the surround could be faced in shells

Or the fireplace could be faced in oyster shells provided you are by the sea and not a lake.

Thank you all, here are more pics of different angles of LR (can only post 4 pics at a time I guess) Agree with your advice that stone would overwhelm space. We had chimney inspected and will do some work to make it safe and put in gas insert. I think only space for tv is over FP….
We are closing in April. Kitchen is behind LR, small sunroom
Off LR. Behind the LR is the front room with another FP which we won’t use right away…would like to paint the room too- any advice for a light clean color. I like coastal feel. Thank you

I was thinking going in a creamy color wash for walls, ceiling and trim...all one color. Add your Coastal blues in furnishings. This room is not exactly like yours but the color scheme is nice.

    Sherwin Williams colors look close....
