last year
last modified: last year

Just purchased a row house built in 1900 and would like to update this guest bathroom but dont have the budget to replace bath tile or countertops so would like to put "lipstick on a pig" until we can do full update. Is it possible to paint the white band of tile in the shower?

Should i wallpaper or paint walls ? color suggestions?? Replace cabinet pulls, mirror, light fixture?

Thanks for your help:)

Countertops are granite

Shower is green marble tile

Yes, tile can be painted, handles can be changed and you can spray paint the frame on your mirror (unless you want to completely change it). I would go to the nearest stone yard with your countertop measurements and see if they have a remnant for sale. You can save a ton on a new countertop that way. Sinks and faucets are not expensive (just changed my own master bath faucets. Nice ones are under $100 each.)

I’m a huge fan of wallpaper in bathrooms. I think it “elevates” the room immediately. Let us know what colors you’re thinking of.

First step new window covering for the bottom so that top can let in natural light asap. The vanity looks like wood and expensive. Replacing the top with a white or light color would be instant upgrade. New wall color. Like the floor as looks like attempt for vintage and goes withe wood.. A new “interesting mirror” maybe oversized. Some art work on both sides if needed for interest on that long wall. The white band, what were they thinking. If possible an experienced tiler to take out and replace with a neutral tile. Probably expensive and risky for adjoining tile so may not be worth it.. Then just pretend not there. Rest of bath perked up and distracts from bath area.

Agree that a new counter, sink and wall paint (agree with @sigrid on color) would go a long way

How long until you think you might do a remodel? If it is a long time, then maybe invest in a new top - look into your local granite yard - you could probably get a remnant for a decent price. I would leave the shower tile alone ( although I do not know anything about painting tile - so look into that for the band ) . Definitely paint a warmer color, change the mirror and add some art.

It really isn't that bad !

    Good luck!

Is that a laminate countertop? Just need to know, looks like it in the picture.

Here's a lipstick fix for you on what seems to be white walls in your pictures.

    - For more contrast, I would paint the vanity in black and replace the knobs

    - Replace the mirror

    - Replace the pendants

    - If possible, replace the sink with a vessel style with new black faucet

    - Paint the white tile strip in black (will be less obvious) or just lease as is

    - Install a colourful roman shade, coordinating bath towels, and art on the wall

Note: I used brass for contrast on the hardware, lighting and bath towel rod

Should you decide to replace the shower door, I would go with a black frame.

I'd lean into making this handsome and moody for the greatest effect and the least amount of effort and money:

    - Paint the walls, ceiling, trim, and mirror frame a blue black or grey black color. It will go well with the vanity, floor, and current counter.

    - Add chrome pulls.

    - Hang a very long curtain in front of the shower. Yep, it will be pain for all of 60 seconds a day however many days of the year someone showers in here. But, it will hide the bad tile and make the room look great everyday when you walk past it. (You can make one or have one made from a drop cloth. Great amount of yardage for cheap.)
