Where do you store your canister vacuums cleaners?

Hi all,

I'm currently in a 2 story home and we have a nice little closet underneath the stairwell. This is where I put my bulky canister vacuum and it works out really well. But we'll be building a custom home next year-it will be a one story house and I'm trying to figure out how much space to allocate for the vacuum. The house plans are currently being drafted. I'd like to put it in the laundry room. In addition to the side by side washer and dryer, we need room for a large gun safe, a place to tuck the kitty's litter box, and storage room for coats and boots/outdoor shoes. Should I just ensure there is a large enough tall cabinet for the vacuum? Thanks for any suggestions.

Have you shared this information with the person that is designing your house?

I will be! We've been working on other areas of the house, like the pantry :) Then I thought about my clunky vacuum cleaner...

I think I’d store my vacuum where it is most commonly used.

We keep our canister in the coat closet. It stores nicely under them, and the wand part just leans up in the corner by the door.

I store my vacuum cleaner in the guest bedroom closet, upstairs. That's where it's used most (upstairs).

I have a smaller stick vac that I use downstairs, along with a Robot Vac that runs every day.

Sounds like you need a bigger laundry room!

I agree with the others - keep the vacuum near where it gets the most use. A coat closet would be fine.

I have always had a central vac system in every house we have bought, so when we built in 2021, I installed a central vac system with Hide-a-hose. No regrets, specially with hardwood/tile floors (with some area rugs) and 3 dogs.

    A couple questions and thoughts:

    - I assume you intend to keep the more bulky canister ... instead of a smaller upright or stick vac?

    - If you intend to go with a stick vac or a robot vac, plan where you'll keep it /install an outlet in an appropriate place.

    - What kind of flooring do you plan? If you're going with mostly hardwood, would you prefer to vacuum it or use a dust mop?

    - If you're planning hardwood in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms, I'd definitely want the vacuum stored near the bedrooms.

    - If you want to store the vacuum in the laundry room, I'd want to fit it into a broom closet /cleaning closet -- but not a tall cabinet, which is more expensive.

I keep mine in the walk-in pantry.

Thanks for all the comments. I do plan to keep the bulky canister vac, as it's very new and was very expensive. I plan to have all hardwood in the new home, except for tile in the bathrooms and laundry room. I will have area rugs in the bedrooms, great room, and maybe under the dining table. My current vacuum will work well on all these surfaces.

My house designer provided a draft where he essentially built a separate little room in the laundry room for the vacuum! I told him that was overkill and unnecessary. He's redesigning it. In looking at the floor plan, I may be able to simply keep it in my master closet behind the door, since there may be "dead" space there. It's funny how in our current 2100 sq. ft, 2-story home, with just the 2 of us, all the closets are full!

We keep our Miele canisters in guest bedroom closets at both of our houses. Honestly, the one at our main residence barely gets used. We have a plug in one of our closets near the kitchen that keeps our cordless stick vac charged and ready to quickly zoom around the kitchen and family room. Even if you don't currently have a stick vac, try and have your builder put outlets in closets near high traffic areas so you can store a cordless vac. We have an awesome central vac system with the retractable hoses, but for day to day quick cleans we're always reaching for our cordless.

My parents had an angle in the hall where they put a triangular closet for the canister vacuum. It worked well, it also held the whole-house vacuum hose, and all the attachments on shelves above the canister vac. Don’t say know to the little vacuum room! You may find it more useful than you think. Put an outlet in it so you can store a handvac, and maybe a stick vac (which will be handy when the canister vac is overkill for a job).
