French provincial chairs need a face lift~ suggestions?!

last year

I inherited these chairs and had them reupholstered several years ago and now want to use them with this living room set. I have priced out redoing them and it will cost about $1000 each.
I’m looking for a more affordable way and need suggestions for this change. My original thought is to paint the chairs a cream color first and see how that looks with the fabric. I will need to research how to remove the fabric back and chair base from the chair.
I’m Interested to see if anyone has a suggestion for me…..

I would try a warmer beiger rug as well.

Thanks for your input! . I will consider it, but the home it bright and airy and I feel that going toward the yellow spectrum wouldn’t work for me

I personally would paint the framework and do a DIY, but, if you aren't up to it, find someone who can. this stripe would be my choice. Yes, professionals will charge that much.

... I'd start by taking one apart and making a good pattern to work with... and keeping all the parts, incase you change your mind and need help.

Do you love the chairs? The rest of your furniture is much more transitional than traditional. $1000 each to reupholster is a reasonable estimate in my area.

Beige doesn't have to be yellow-toned, it's not the same as tan, and those chairs are not yellow toned in every picture, at least on my monitor, so I agree with not going yellow toned.

The chairs already go with everything in the room except the ottoman, mostly, and maybe the rug. I think you could downplay the more yellow leanings from the chair fabric by changing the ottoman which I think is much too cool and dark for the rest, it looks almost bluish.

I am not recommending the color on the ottoman specifically , it's a color grab from the sofas where the sunlight is Not hitting them and turning them bluish in the color grab

I would not paint the frames, I think they work with the floor. And $1000 to reupholster and you still end up with better chairs than $2000 would get you, and definitely better than what cheaper new chairs would be. But I think you could fix this without 2000 by addressing other things.

I like the chairs as is, but they don't work well with your other furnishings. Can you use them in another room? Or if you're changing them, I'd keep the wood and just reupholster with a solid, more casual fabric so they don't seem so formal.

With other decor you could integrate these chairs into the room. Specifically select pillows for the couches that have the colors of the chairs, both the frame and the cushions. If the art on the walls is just generic decor, change it to include chair color--if it is real art, consider at least painting the frame the color of the chair frame.

The chairs are lovely, but look dwarfed compared to the scale of your sofas. Additionally, as mentioned they are traditional when all your selections appear transitional to modern.

The fabric and finish look perfect as they are. I would not destroy them by reworking them. They might be worth quite a bit of money.

Your room selections have to lean as you see in the images below to get those chairs to work as they are.

For less money you could replace your sofas to go with the chairs. You just have to decide if the living room is really the best place for these chairs.

I wouldn’t touch them either. But I agree with @BeverlyFLADeziner that they look dwarfed in room. IMO that’s because they’re each sitting alone. The one by sofa looks like a temporary location. I’d place them together at corner of FP with the whimisical butler table between them. Grouped together they ’look’ like they have more heft & they’re also farther away from sofa & ottoman colors. Maybe look for a small solid color light grey tone lumbar pillow for each - that pillow could tie them into the gray of rug & ottoman.

ETA: I’d also try placing only the front legs of chairs on the rug since one sofa is off rug & the other has front feet on.

I have reupholstered chairs a number of times and initially inquired from friends and neighbours if they knew of a retired experirnced upholster that was working out of their home. He provided a yardage estimate, so I was able to purchase the fabrics without a mark up (actually at a discount at a Kobe outlet). Saved 1/2 of what they would of cost.

Your chairs are not a difficult job for a pro time wise and the quantity of fabric needed is not great. If interested, maybe look into before you spend $2,000. My other advice is to take a lot of time deciding on the fabric.

Agree with grouping the two chairs together as suggested. Get some thro pillows for sofa with just a slight touch of glitz.

Try a new arrangement first. Turn the rug. Face the sofas with front legs on the rug. Place the chairs to face the fireplace with a small table between.

Don’t think rug can be turned - it’s a rectangle & too long the other way. Best the way it is.

Then try the arrangement without the rug and find another spot in the house for the rug, maybe under the dining table?

Use the tone of the chairs for accents.

    For the sofas:

Go vintage for the coffee table, like this gorgeous Baker piece on etsy.

I've reupholstered dining room chairs. I would not call those chairs a simple job for a beginner project. Doable, yes. You can find instructions on YouTube, so I'd watch a few before deciding if it's within your skill set.

Kathleen, I made a suggestion about turning the rug. I thought you answered me, but it was another commentator answering for you.

They are too small compared to the other furniture in this room. Use them elsewhere or store them until a time in which they make more sense to use.

Painting them would not solve the yellowing fabric issue.

I would 't touch the chairs which seem to be in good condition but work on the decor. Replace the solid colour accent pillows with some with texture/pattern in blue/gray/beige, instead of horizontal blinds cordless natural fibre/bamboo roman shades, new more imposing visually table lamps, blue lumbar pillows on the Bergère chairs.
