Renting for the first time in 15 years and feeling stuck on what to do with this living room. What can / should I put to either side of the fireplace? How should I lay out couches / chairs? Organic Modern... Any help greatly appreciated with this fried brain of mine.

Interesting steps on what looks like the outside of the stair railing. I would put some plants there.

Jackie do you have any furniture to incorporate? Do you have storage needs (I have 100s of art books so always have to have shelves).

INFO please or all you get are guesses.

Guesses are fine. I haven’t moved in, I don’t have specifics, just looking for general ideas

How will this room be used? Small kids living with you full or part time? What’s the view? Room has good bones, but if you want ideas we need to know how it will be used and by whom.

We have no idea how big this room is or how many people you want to seat.

I don’t love the idea the TV over the fireplace. It necessitates most of your seating be in the entrway, which is a traffic jam.

Do you intend this to be the place where you will watch TV? Do the windows go all the way across the long wall?

Not enough info here to be of help.

Post a picture of the rooms dimensions. All walls windows and doorways. You can do this on a piece of paper if you have to and post a picture of that.

I am in the minority on here, we love our tv above the fireplace. It’s a Samsung frame so we change the picture seasonally. We sit very far back so no neck issues.

You are starting a new life; but you are renting, so pick things in stages. Find some inspiration photos that appeal to you and start there. You need seating, lighting, may be a pattern carpet to add color.

It appears to be a generous sized room. You should be able to accommodate plenty of furniture. Can you please post a to scale floor plan. That will help everyone out a lot in helping you lay out furnishings.

SO you have nothing to bring? Honestly you need to give us something to work with what style would you have had in your other life that you loved ? Post some rooms you love on the wb in your idea books for crying out loud we need something .

My suggestion would be to pick a couch first. Do you want something neutral or a color? Three seats are a good investment for most people.

Your rug, chairs and accessories can be built off the color and style of the couch. Go sit on many couches. Pretty ones may be too uncomfortable. Fall in love with a couch and you’ve got a starting point.

If you post the measurements of the room, some talented pros will give you layouts. And the tv doesn’t HAVE to be over the fireplace….

Photos can distort the dimensions of the room but I’m guessing yours is much like mine. I have two couches facing each other and perpendicular to the fireplace. But that’s because when watching perplexing art films on TV or reading deep literary books at the fire I’m sitting sideways in my couch with my back leaning on the armrest and my legs stretched out. (In other words, I’m snoozing!) seriously much depends on what you and whoever lives with you will do in the room most of the time. I do think too much emphasis is put on “entertaining” and not on everyday living. you can go in any direction for colors - maybe look at your favorite clothes and go from there. You could also arrange your furniture to sort of divide in two, so part of the room would be a study or crafts space.

We wish you well. These are hard steps to take and the beginning of a new life. Sure hope you can get in there and get some other pictures and some measurements. That will honestly help us do a better job of helping you. Best wishes.

What she said ^^^^ Measurements will get you more precise layout ideas.

    1. Given you are renting that should narrow down what you would like to add on the sides of the fireplace. Think about what meets your needs and has adaptable usage in future homes.

    2. I’d be purchasing your seating first as it’s the biggest commitment financially/long term/will drive most of your other decisions.

    3. Planning is everything as you have a lot of decisions to make. Prioritize so as not to be overwhelmed and start off looking on line for inspiration re: layouts that will suit how you live, room’s functionality and a “look”.

    4. If you would like help, provide some info: will room be a combined LR and DR, dimensions and structural elements, your needs and your preferred style.

If it helps, my daughter recently rented her first home and her first purchases were a well made sectional* and bedroom set (did a lot of research) Having a direction/style in mind it really helped and she took her time. It was a fun journey vs being overwhelming.

We both searched Marketplace all the time and found some really great pieces. Good luck.

    * If interested there are endless configurations available. It’s extremely comfortable.
