90s Bathroom Update

last month

Hi everyone! I need some help with design ideas for our guest bathroom. I have updated our master bath that had a similar vanity by painting it SW evergreen fog, left the countertops as is and added shiplap to the wall behind the sink, and updated the mirror.

We have already updated the faucet and hardware in here. I have added trim to update our doors and painted doors and trim white (SW alabaster). I will paint the trim the same alabaster here as well.

Can’t decide if I should paint the vanity alabaster/white, black, or evergreen fog.

Please give me your thoughts on what you would do to update this space!

Please add a photo of your updated primary bathroom. I'd love to see how it turned out by painting the vanity SW Evergreen Fog.

What color are your walls? Are you okay with repainting the walls?

I'd paint it the same color as the walls. Your walls are a beautiful color, they work with your flooring, black hardware will pop nicely against it, and the sink color looks fine with it. It is a small room and will look chopped up with another big block of color.

I can't tell from these pics if your countertop has a yellow-ish or pink tinge to it but I think white and black are not going to make it look good. Maybe you can post a pic of the evergreen fog you used in your other bathroom to show how it looks.

Here is the master bath! It looks a grayish in some lighting, but is evergreen fog

I have looked through the paint the previous owners left here, and cannot find that wall color. So I am open to painting the wall for sure.

I’m not sure what the wall color is either

I love the wall color and would not change it. I don't like the idea of the evergreen fog in this smaller bathroom. I'm not in love with the look of it against the sink top color.

In your first pic, the grey of your hand towel goes nicely with the almost peachy look of the sink. The sink would look nice with that vanity color. However, it doesn't necessarily relate to the wall color you have, which I think is the best part of the room right now.

I assume that the countertop material is the same in both bathrooms. As noted by Kendrah above, the Evergreen Fog + whatever color white the shiplap is on the vanity wall in your primary bathroom = very yellow toned looking countertop. Maybe it's just the shiplap - but the countertop color looks better in the bathroom that you are getting ready to update than it does in the primary one.

You could find out the color of your walls by taking off your outlet cover and removing a very small piece of painted drywall - then having that piece analyzed at SW to see what color it is.

If you are willing to change the countertop (painting/using ardex feather finish to make it look like a solid concrete countertop/replacing with a very cheap remnant - they are sold in fabricators' "graveyards" - my sister bought one for $150 that included a cutout for her sink) - that would open up a ton of different colors that you could use in the bathroom.

I concur with what dani wrote---- when we were having work done in our house ( master bathroom) the contractors really mucked up the hallway walls which had been painted by the previous owner. They took a sample to SW and I was astounded at how perfectly it matched. They didn't paint the full hallway ( it's a 2 story and goes on and on) and you really cannot tell.

I think my guest bathroom has a similar toned vanity and I am trying to update that room as well, but looking to do minial work - so I will be following along.

I wouldn't paint the vanity at all. I think the countertop is the issue in both bathrooms. In the bath you've already done it now stands out as the only item not updated. In the bath you're now interesting in finishing it doesn't look good with the wall color, but the wall color does work with the floor. Wood vanities are back "in," so no need to paint it unless it has a very worn appearance. Even if it looks worn there are techniques to refresh a wood finish. The shower curtain is not working for me. I don't know whether you intend to keep it or not.

We would definitely like to update the bathroom counters eventually. However, it won’t be happening this year!

Does anyone have experience with painting laminate countertops? I’ve seen kits online but didn’t know how well or how long they hold up without chipping or peeling.

Abby - I've seen blogs/YouTube videos re: painting countertops - but I don't know anyone who has actually painted one.

However, I know someone who used Ardex feather finish (in the white color - not the regular gray cement) over their cointertop- and it looks just like a cement countertop. She also used a sealer over it afterwards in order to prevent staining. The white Ardex feather finish looked better than the regular gray one (at least I thought so).

    Gray ardex feather finish:

Gray ardex + black powder pigment (you can also use acid stains to change the color):

Light gray with sealer on it:

I decided to add this next photo to show you how the water beads up once it's sealed. You can reseal as needed (also, you can remove stains with acetone before resealing it). Works well for outdoor counters and/or furniture also:

I was looking at this product because I'd like to update one of my fireplace surrounds to cast stone (I have four that I'm updating/changing the surrounds - only one to cast stone) - a friend used this instead and saved over $3,000.

It's easy to use + there are many powdered pigments that you can use if you want a specific color.
