update and add charm- ranch exterior

last month

Counting on your design wisdom! We are updating the exterior of our home to create a more charming, welcoming, classic feel. Thinking Arctic white. What can we do with the bump outs around the windows? Should we add stacked stone? Same color to the roof instead of the white vents? Other ideas?

I like the house as it is it is the landscaping that can be the big improvement , you have agreat piece property but no real landscping . Sorry stacked stone slapped on does not inprove most homes A nice wood garage door with windows and a front door to match might be a nice thought. The rest a good landscape design . Talk to alndscape designer to see what can be done in your area for plants and that will add so much to thta house .I like the white trim on the dark I like white houses but not this one all white and for sure no shutters anywhere This kind of idea to enhance the house the idea is for the landscaping not the house itself

I don't think of Arctic White and charming together. I think if this house was all white it would be uninteresting. The dark blue with white trim isn't doing much for me though. It's not terrible, but you can do better. IMO, this style of house on a wooded lot you should be thinking of colors found in nature, or charcoal gray with a natural wood garage door like Patricia says looks good on this style. Landscaping would really bring it up a level. Consult a local gardening center that does landscape design. We are doing that right now ourselves. It's not cheap, but does add value and appeal. Move quickly if you want to do this as they are entering their busy season.

The soft off white from your ideabook photo

would be much better than Arctic White. Your house roof is soft brown, not black or charcoal gray, hence a lower contrast paint would look much better than stark Arctic White.

Inserting a Houzz photo link is not working at the moment.

    White with gray trim.

I know it's not white, but here is a monochromatic gray-on-gray taken from the roof color.

The house is a bit quirky in the details. The house part is modern, but the details on the garage are country. You can do all white of course but remember wood get stain, metal and stucco get paint.

The lot could use significant more landscaping features to enhance the appearance of the house.

Thanks to all of you for the great ideas! We will skip the stone. Adding a summer pic with a bit more perspective and a sense of what we've adjusted so far on landscape. We are in a cul de sac and while we have woods in the back, the front and sides are pretty open. We are zone 5. Keep the feedback coming!!

Your last pic demonstrates what a difference beautiful landscaping can make!

Very pretty, and like shrubs near the house with the more natural look.

    Lovely house.

Anything but white! It’s a great house.

I'm not fond of the lines on the window bump outs. It makes what is an otherwise nice home appear disjointed and quirky. I'd paint the siding and trim all one color (I'd vote for a very soft white, not harsh like Arctic, or a soft khaki). Add a wood garage door with windows, and change the triangular peaks to a matching wood.

Very nice. You could do something to coordinate with the landscaping around the tree into the beds closer to the house. I agree with Kendrah. Soft white with a wood garage door.

I would go with warm off-white to pop up white trim.

Where are you thinking of putting stone? "Charming" stone might be rounded or irregular. Are you ok with that?

Adding natural wood with golden undertones for the front door will help bring the charm and soften the effect of the white you like.

Make the garage door the same or similar color as the garage body color to reduce contrast so it doesn't draw attention away from the front door.

Your shrubbery has become old and needs refreshing or replacing, especially the hedge on the left.

I think you have a very interesting house and wish you the best.
