Siding help please

I will need new siding on my small ( 850 sq ft ), single story , shed roof home. I do not like vinyl and I don't want to have to paint. I like the looks of a modern home but since my neighborhood is generally simple 1 story ranches ( they were all old summer cottages ), I am trying to blend.

This is the general idea of the house

One has vertical siding, one horizontal and the other has shingles.

I do need to be budget conscious but I won't go cheap. I am getting older so maintenance needs to be minimal which is why I started looking at Hardie board ( which I have heard is $$$$)

My experiences with siding have been vinyl and wood that needs painting and replacing when it rots.

I don't have my plans drawn up yet. The layout is almost the same as now - new roof line and moving around some walls for better closets. I am trying to get my research done so I can be ready to go go go! I don't know what I don't know - so your brilliant minds will be extremely helpful.

Thanks ahead of time!

I don't know anything about siding but just wanted to say that third rendering (minus the exterior wood beams) is spectacular. The windows, stone, how the color blends into nature. It is modern yet is one with nature. How incredible.

This is metal siding. I'm sure it comes in a variety of colors It has a unique finish that makes it appear to be wood.

I have a client building a barndominium near there lake home.....in the woods on a huge piece of land

She sent me pics of the metal cladding yesterday ( like a barn wood ) that were just incredible! So realistic it was ridiculous.

I'd definitely look into that stuff.

    @ DebWashburn

You're not "cheaping out" .....and maybe it's a moment you take OUR OWN : ) advice?

Ask an architect pal for help with the whole thing has to be someone you know in that kitchen biz of yours. You need the drawings and permits anyway. They usually know the best cladding/roofing etc as well.

Or we can call on @ Mark Bischak ........

does fantastic renderings too : )

" We need to see your house please post the pic her ein a comment DO NOT START anothe post. "

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, Deb Washburn has almost 70000 posts, I do not think she needs to be chastised by you like a first time poster, and quite honestly NO ONE DESERVES to ber chastised. Unless you feel chastising is fine then I will bring up your not proof reading or using spellcheck, but of course just use your as an excuse.

As another poster said - metal siding would be a good choice as it is very durable and will probably never need painting. Another suggestion is Hardie siding. It is very durable and comes prefinished.

Patricia? I am sorry, but it just proves as the very regular kitchen commenter you are, with "I run a catering business" ? How little of a thread you read. Deb is a KD Pro. Many of her

7000 posts go to kitchen and bath questions.

More importantly, the relentless " DO NOT START ANOTHER POST" is annoying and if the continual second post issue annoys you? There are other ways to say it, that are less repetitive, and less annoying to the frequent fliers among us. Deb is too nice to call it out, btw.: ) and I'm obviously not as nice.

Try this, instead for a while.

"It's very helpful for you and for us, if you continue all further information within this thread you began" ( add a smiley if you like )

@Patricia Colwell and who made you Pope? I think I speak for many here that you offer nice help, the condescending tone and holier than thou attitude is a complete turnoff in my opinion. And many people will not speak up and maybe they should as I sure there are plenty that feel the same as I just stated.

I happen to not sugar coat advice it is IMO condescending when dealing with adults I say it like it is and I have never been accused of being holier than anyone just honest . Take my word for it my clients have always loved the fact I am honest and straight forward and anyone who is a pro should also appreciate that fact .

    Here is the issue:

"She is a pro she should know better no pics no help."

Did she specifically contact only y.o.u for help?

    She asked a community!

Yours is not the only valid advice, and fact is you didn't even realize the Pro you addressed in that comment, is as frequent a contributor as you are, and a kitchen pro.

    That.......says it all.

OK - sorry to cause a fight. I just assumed Patricia used a copy and paste type of reply.

The house is about 1 hr north of NYC. So all 4 seasons here. We do get some spells in the winter that are in the single digits and July/August can shoot to the upper 90s.

This pic shows alot of trees. I am planning on taking down the oak on the left and one or 2 of the bigger ones behind the house.

Unfortunately it has had its day. The original part of the house is collapsing so I finally have enough saved - hopefully to do this.

Thanks to all your responses so far.

I do have an architect and lots of connections through my job. I am also at the same mercies as others who come here - I don't know a lot of things!

Thanks for that suggestion of metal siding - I had thought of a metal roof, but thought that might be out of my budget.

I wish I could reply to each of you! I appreciate you all and will probably be back with more questions.

This will be my retirement home so I want to make the most informed decisions I can so I can relax and have some margaritas!

It is such a cute house in the woods! Newburgh? Poughkeepsie? : ) Closer to Albany lol? I'd give it off for some serious consultation with an arch. Maybe do some time trade as most aren't in love with the kitchen process ?

Thanks Jan - I'm near Peekskill/Cortlandt manor. The community was originally all summer houses with no bedrooms. That changed on the 70s.

Thanks Lala - it is going to be interesting. Every time my reps bring in new tiles, my little bathroom changes!

I would probably go with LP Smartside Horizonal Clapboard, sort of what you have now. Personally I like the red color with a brite white trim.

I have never used copy and paste for my comments and IMO your house is nothing like the ones posted so of course we needed pics . Cute house an awesome site Maybe not metal unless you dowant to give it a bit of modern twist.. I think you might still look at the metal thta looks like wood that was suggested The site is so cool it might be nice for the house to just kind of disappear in the woods and just awesome landscaping to bring it together

I do really love the more modern look of the shed roof ( bonus points because I think it is less expensive to install ) . The ceiling in my living room now starts at 7 ft and goes up to 12 ft. I love that airiness of the higher ceiling.

My current house is about 22 x 40 +- including the "porch" the lot is only 69 x 100 so I do need to stay long and narrow and location of septic really locks me into this size.

My big problem is I love everything.

Here are some pics of my neighborhood ( all small homes, nothing fancy ) :

    - recent modular put in

    one road

    Recently remodeled flip

I do like the red house. But I think I am ready for a big change. I love the dark charcoal almost black homes with a natural wood trim and black windows. I also love a dark green or sage as well - like the pics I posted in the beginning.

Thanks Millworkman - I will look into that.

I am planning on working with a local lumberyard for my doors, window, siding and roofing. I am sure they have suggestions as well. I just want some education ahead of time.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I plan on flowers galore! I just need the house set, then I can save up for the proper landscaping. I can't wait for that.

I don't care for a lot of different roof lines. I supposed I could do something like this?

This is quite cute, but I still like the shed roof. Honestly - if it fits my budget I would be thrilled with either style!

    Thanks again!!
