There is no such fabric, honestly. Leather, a firm smooth, will show the scratches, but will not shred.

Your best defense is a scratching posts and pads.......and water bottle spray: ) in the face.

Velvet or mohair (or faux-hair) are pretty impenetrable to cats' claws.* I have an Interior Define sectional using their faux hair and it still looks fabulous after a couple of years (not a long time in furniture life, I realize).

*But cats are gonna cat, and if they want to ruin velvet, eventually they will. :-)

Cats are gonna claw and scratch. Takes effort to train them not to.

BPMBA, tell me about Interior Define. I liked their fabric samples and they have two pieces that are close to what I want but I’ve started seeing really bad reviews.

Keep the claws trimmed and get leather we have always had leather and cats thye can't get their claws into the leather and thta is what they love to do and Is why they snag cloth . Play posts and more than one are really great .

Sorry. Leather has taken a beating. And they have about 10 various scratching posts. I hate leather and bought a leather couch on impulse so am trying to find a fabric that won’t interest them.

I agree, Interior Define reviews are pretty bad. I've gone to their showroom in NYC and was not impressed with the quality either. I recall shopping at Room and Board and one of the sales people talking about their cat friendly fabric. I don't have a cat so didn't pay attention. Call them. They have great customer service and will talk to you about what their cat friendly fabric does or does not do.

We have 2 cats and a velvet sectional from Room and Board. So far so good.

I had the Room and Board Dean sofa (2014) which I just gave to my daughter last week-still looks perfect. I've ordered the Alex sofa which is currently the closest style to the old Dean (prefer no loose cushions on the back and firm seat cushions). There are plenty of pet friendly fabrics and the fabric product pages show rub test results and other parameters to take into account when choosing.

Generally velvets or other cut-pile type fabrilcs do pretty well with cats. So do fine, tight weaves. Where we’ve gotten into trouble is with boucles and loose weaves with chunkier yarns - basically anything a cat could get a claw hooked into.

My two gripes about ID are that it took 20 weeks to arrive (this was last year) and the throw cushions are like placemats - SO FLAT. But the sectional itself seems to be well made. Maybe things have changed since then.

I've cat proofed my upholstered furniture and expensive drapes ... I got dogs!

One of my rescues tried to nibble on the fringe of my wool hand-knotted rugs when we first got her. Only took 2 or 3 verbal corrections and redirection and she has never touched fringe again in 6 years.
