How would you Reno/redesign this kitchen?

last month

The wallpaper is now gone and the appliances have been changed out. How would you Reno/redesign/update this kitchen?

Appliances are now all stainless steel

It depends on your budget and how large of a project you want this to be.

Ultimately I’d change out the upper cabinet doors to have no arch.

    Add hardware

    New countertops and backsplash.

    New sinks.

    New tile

    I mean, options are endless.
If you’re just wanting minor upgrades I’d redo the flooring and possibly add some open shelving.

Thank you! Looking at a $25k budget

    Add cabinet and drawer pulls

Paint walls same color as the family room

There are 3 types of flooring in the photo. Hall looks like wood or wood-look something. If that product is still available and you like it, extend it into the family room and kitchen.

    A real hood.

I'd like to move the sink and dishwasher down so there is more useful counterspace between the sink and the stove. However, that probably isn't worth it outside of a more total redesign.

    I like that idea! Thanks!

Not sure where you are, but my DD is getting new Kraftmaid cabinets and counters for $12k plus labor for a kitchen roughly the size of yours. Are you interested in that?

With your new white appliances you can go for an all white kitchen and bring colour in the accessories. Look into replacing the doors for a more current style, install a white herringbone pattern backslash, place 1 or 2 runners on the floor, and hang 2 or 3 pendant above the peninsula.

What's the scope? I understand your budget is $25K, but how far are you willing to go?

I agree with others about getting rid of the Over-the-Range MW and getting a true hood.

@lisedv - the white appliances are the old appliances. The new ones are stainless steel.

I would do nothing until I got rid of the wall to wall carpet in the yonder for a wood floor, and then decide a look and feel for the kitchen as LONG as you are happy with the layout of appliances and storage.

Thanks all! I love all your suggestions so much! @Jan Moyer - yes, carpet is now gone and wood floor is in. @lisedv I love the layout you did and the pendants! So cool how you wrapped that wall near the island. Maybe I could use a faux brick or something?
Appliances are now all updated to stainless steel! Now need hood and cabinetry ideas. Thanks again!

Oh please no faux brick! I don't know what you mean exactly, I just left the wallpaper in the background (I know it's now gone) and covered the border with moulding near the ceiling. I had done the white because I didn't realize your appliances were now stainless but if you want colour you now have lots of options with the wood floors and no wallpaper. What does your wood floor look like? What does the adjacent room look like decor and colour wise?

Are you up for replacing the cabinets? IKEA are relatively inexpensive and get good reviews.

Great idea! I’ll check that out! Thanks!

In a second glance and all honesty? I would strip the wallpaper, paint, and wait this out to a total rip of the kitchen .

The cabinet bases are 90% door, it is short and stubby uppers, nary a drawer in sight. The faces are 1975 arch. It isn't deserving of even a diy paint job. You won't starve, you can make a meal. Delay/save : )

I agree with stripping the wallpaper, painting walls and holding off until your budget is larger to replace the kitchen.

Is the tall narrow wall at the end of the island structural or can it be removed?

  • last month

You say you have replaced the wood floor, removed the wallpaper and replaced the appliances. Can you post current pictures so we know exactly what we are dealing with? That would be helpful. Also, what is the existing floor in the kitchen?

  • last month

Yes, good idea! Here are more updated photos. Thanks. And I believe that wall at the end of the island is structural (load bearing). Also, I do agree with the idea to rip out all cabinetry and start fresh.

I’d like to take new cabinets up to the ceiling. Maybe some decorative glass cabinets with lights at the top?

Before anything, you get to a fully measured and accurate drawing of the existing space. Every wall, window, opening, to the inch!!

    Two dimensions, flat on paper...and.....

include all of this and its boundaries we can not see: )

in the drawing, same thing, every wall, window where every opening is etc

    Thank you! Will do that.

Glad to see you continued the wood floors into the space! Nice foundation to work with!
