Help me decorate - One Rug or Two?

Edited: We are relocating our dining room - where we eat dinner most weeknights - into a formal living room that is adjacent to the kitchen. We will also keep a sitting area in the room (21 ft x 16 1/2 ft)

Do we need one rug or two? Things are *mostly* to scale.

If you want a rug under the dining table, I like just one rug for the room. But check your dimensions. Your rug should be 2 feet wider than your table on all sides, and you should have 3 feet of open floor between the rug and the fireplace for a safe walkway. So dining table needs to be at least 5 feet from the fireplace. Will this work with your furniture dimensions and lighting placement.

NO to the giant one but I do not like rugs in DRs and for sure not in a family DR so one for the sitting area but I have to saay it looks a bit tight for all you want in there

From experience, it all should fit fine, as long as the furniture is scaled correctly. Our living/dining room is also 21' long, but only 14' wide. And we have a similar furniture arrangement, except the chairs face the sofa. It works because we have smaller-scale vintage furniture. With chairs as OP has them, it should work fine.

I appreciate the input. Not sure if I can get 5 feet between the furnace and dining room, but I'm not committed to anything in the room except the couch do I guess I could look for some smaller chairs to give myself the space. Thank you!

I would say skip the dining rug, and size up the sitting area to be more generous but leave circulation room & not encroach on dining chair pushback space. So the measurements are key.

You don't need five feet between the table and the fireplace if you don't have a rug. If it's all the same flooring, then you only need enough space to comfortably walk past the chair. Three feet minimum, four is better.

I agree with one in the living room, but it needs to be larger. Maybe another one for the dining, but it depends on your furniture. If you have upholstered seats and drapery, then you probably already have enough softness to not need a rug. But if you have hard chairs and no drapery, I'd add a DR rug so it's not cold and echo-y.

If your furniture is in place (or wait) and tape out to see if you actually like two rugs.

I‘d start off in the living room (don’t suggest one large rug across the expanse).

You can always add one in the DR down the road.
