Shingle Oak Tree?

last year

This tree with ~4.5" leaves was found growing in a suburban landscape north of Austin. Is it perhaps a Shingle Oak, or something else?

Looks like a Shingle Oak. Check the underside of a leaf. It should look rough in comparison to the glossy top.

The foliage doesn't look right for shingle oak.

Yeah, arbordave, I have my questions too. This is what a nearby shingle oak from me looks like -- leaves a fair bit smaller and shinier -- OP's leaves look matte. It don't think the OP's looks like laurel oak either.

I'm beginning to think the OP's tree could be some species of magnolia.

Yes it's Magnolia grandiflora I think? There's a lot of variation in the bark. It can be smooth or rough. Leaf undersides should be tomentose. There's only 1 observation for grandiflora, and 0 observations for virginiana.
