Seek inputs for the lighting arrangement for livingroom with fireplace

Hi Houzz community,

I am trying to install the recessed lights for my family room with the fireplace. My living room is 256 inch by 169 inch. The Fireplace wall is 13 inch thickness. There will be three small projection lights (4 inch or even smaller) on the ceiling in front of fireplace (the stud for those lights will be 16 to 32 inch from the left wall in the below picture). I am planning to put three groups of recessed lights (6 inch ) for the room. The center group will be two recessed lights plus a bigger ceiling light. Now I got a question where I should center the center group. I have three options. Option A will be the center line to the end wall, Option B is taking the center line to the fireplace wall. Option C is taking the center line to the line of projection lights. Can I get some recommendation? thanks

I do not recommend ceiling lights in a living room, unless you have high ceilings. It may end up looking like a hospital room. If you insist on having ceiling lights, please be sure to put them on a dimmer. Put in a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

thanks. Yes, the ceiling light will be flat and there will be a dimmer for it.

Better to simply have a few ceiling lights directed at lighting art on the wall and the fireplace.

Living rooms need table and accent lamps to make them feel cozy.

thanks. The wires are already set and I only have room to wiggle between the studs. It will be hard to make changes for the wiring .

I'd focus on lighting the perimeter, rather than overall.

Do you know what your furniture plan is? How do any of your proposed center lines relate to where you will actually be sitting in the room? That's what you should be planning around.

This is my intended layout of my furniture. The center of window to the left wall is 105.5 inch. The fireplace is standing out 13 inch from the left wall. I am thinking to get the center group of lights as close as to the center of the coffee table (which is currently aligned with the center of the window)

    No TV??

@fisherpurdue that's a great space. Agree on having the center group of lights centered roughly over the coffee table.

    Do 4” not 6”

@Patricia Colwell Consulting thanks for the suggestion. I thought about the piano as well, maybe we will replace it with a small table there but move piano to another room. I am also planning to add some floor lamp and table lamp around sofa area.

@mcarroll16. I have a group of projection lights in front of fireplace. Then I have three groups of recessed lights. I just feel to center the 2nd group of recessed lights (and ceiling light) on the center of coffee table will make the left side of lighting too crowded and also created an unbalanced feeling. I still want the 2nd group of recessed lights and ceiling lights align with the center of the room (either with respect to the left wall or with respect to the fireplace wall) How do you think?

Some ceiling lights are needed IMO in a large space but too many are not great. Lighing is best when layered so some ceiling some floor lamps some table lamps and maybe even a sconce or 2 but not all on the ceiling . Now you have all the ceiing in make those all on dimmers and get to work on some layered lighting please .Your furniture layout plan screams for lighting at a lower level . Whay is the piano shoved out of the space at all it looks like an after thought and again needs a light Not your type of piano but you get the idea

@fisherpurdue I think that symmetry is not very relevant in lighting. Especially with recessed lights, where the whole pint is that they shouldn't be very noticeable. Put the light where it's needed, and use 4" cans as @ker9 suggested. Then figure out the best place to have a large ceiling fixture. For me, that would be roughly over the coffee table. A fixture there will give a good overall ambient light to your seating area, and you supplement with floor and table lights near the seating.

Look at the rendering you posted. The one eye-catching light will be the ceiling fixture. Where should it be in the picture? Sketch in a simple large pendant in a few different locations and see what you think looks right.

I don’t know about anyone else but I never turn on my overhead recessed can lights in the living area. (More text than this is invisible on iPad.) I like a floor up light.

I'm with @ker9. I really don't like the light from the 6" cans in our living room. I do like the light from our dining table drum pendant, which gives some direct lighting but a lot of soft ambient uplighting. I wish we had another fixture roughly over the coffee table to give the same ambient lighting to the seating area.
