shutters on windows

To use shutters on windows or not? It looks like it needs something more on front. I thought about putting shutters the same color of the peaks and beams and the painting the front door black fox. Any suggestions?

NOT. a lighter door would be more welcoming.

I see shingles, stone and siding, all different colors. No, nothing more is needed. Not every square inch of house needs to be decorated. Seriously, if you people were fashion designers, every dress would have sequins, bows, lace, and ruffles and you'd be asking if maybe you should add some feathers.

    Lyn is correct.
Forgo the shutters. The timber of the porch is a solid feature that relegates the other elements to a deserved background.
Shutters, unless vital for sun control ,would detract from the general gravitas of the house.
Lightening the door color itself could add to the eye appeal.
Overall , you have a solid substantial property which does not need flimsy fakey false eyelashes stuck on to an otherwise pleasant face.
    My opinion only!

Consider landscaping for the “something more” that you are seeking.

You built in early 2022. What does the house look like today?

I’ll have to take a current pic next time down there. It is our lake house get away. We haven’t done much landscaping around it at this point because not sure what to plant that deer won’t eat!

Homes like these typically DO NOT have shutters

IMO your home looks like it needs something because it has no landscaping plan.

    Definitely landscaping. No shutters.

Those "shutters' are just fake nonsense anyway. I really hate them! They are all about style and not substance and the style is sadly lacking. I took them off when we had new siding put on many years ago and the really dumb thing is that we may have to replace them when we sell our 40 plus year old house, as per the HOA..

Real shutters that actually function are different, but these silly things are awful.

Another poster compared them to fake eyelashes. What an apt comparison! Those are pretty awful too.

Definately needs landscaping. Work with your local nursery (not a big box store garden center) to design a plan that is deer resistant.

    No shutters.

We just had a landscaping plan done by a local nursery. They have worked on several properties in our neighborhood. They know better than anyone what deer will and won't eat because the nursery has an acre of plants and they have been in business for 50 years. It is hard to find things that deer absolutely won't eat, but there are also plants that they won't eat unless it's a bad winter and they're desperate. Things that they don't prefer. We live in an area which is half suburban/half rural, so there are abundant deer. My point is, don't give up on landscaping; consult a local expert. Just be aware that you need to water new plants consistently in the beginning, so have plantings installed when you are going to be around to take care of them initially.

    Agree. Just needs landscaping.

It's odd that you house almost seems two-toned. Is the back portion in deep shade? If not, I think I would address that before the shutters. If you do install shutters please make them operable and sized correctly to fit the windows.

I think you already have enough finishes on the house and shutters will look out of place but landscaping is where to spend money now.

Boxwood shrubs are generally considered to be deer-resistant. They contain bitter alkaloids that deer dislike, and the pungent scent also helps to deter them.

This is a current picture of the house! We have landscaped on the right side with a juniper and some abelia just trying to figure out the left!!
